The Boy (The Inhabitant)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Greta Evans takes on a job as a family nanny for the Heelshire family in the united Kingdom. She is surprised to discover that the child is a large fragile doll that comes with a list of strict rules. After breaking the rules unexpected events make her believe that the doll is possessed by the families deceased son.

This film was directed by William Brent Bell. This film has a simple storyline that comes with a plot twist at the end. Unfortunately, the plot twist is so familiar that it does not aid the film in standing out. Any tense moments are cut to short by emotional character development. The overall story is decent enough to make it enjoyable. The doll is creepy enough to give the film an unnerving feeling. There isn't a lot of gore or violence in this film. There are a few jump scares, but its not overdone. Lauren Cohan played the role of Greta Evans. The story really does set her up as a familiar female victim character. However, her performance does offer the character emotional likability but does not stand out from the archetype. Rupert Evans played the role of Malcolm. He was great as a supporting actor for Cohan.

This film can be seen on DVD!

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent horror story for audiences wanting to avoid too much violence.

Trumbo

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based on the biography of Dalton Trumbo by Bruce Alexander Cook. This film follows the life story of Dalton Trumbo, a screenwriter who was a part of the communist party and became blacklisted.

This film was directed by Jay Roach. This film, naturally, is not fully historically accurate. Now, this does spend a lot of time talking about the communist party. It also talks about the communist party in a very positive light, and this might offend some audiences. It also makes Hollywood executives looks bad. The story itself is very charming and very well written. It really does offer a feeling in being a part of this troubling time. This is a long movie, and can often feel like its taking a lot of time. Bryan Cranston played the role of Dalton Trumbo. He was perfect in this role. His performance really made this film. Diane Lane played the role of Cleo Trumbo. She worked alongside Cranston. Her character humanized Dalton's. Helen Mirren played the role of Hedda Hopper. She made a great villain for this film.

This film can be seen on DVD!

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! The acting in this film coupled with the great script makes it worth the watch.

Star Trek Beyond

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is the third part in the reboot franchise, and is part of the Star Trek series created by Gene Roddenberry. The Enterprise and its crew has continued its search into deep space. They are instructed to investigate a missing crew. However, they quickly discover that they and the Federation are in danger against a new deadly foe, Krall.

This film was directed by Justin Lin. The story of this film is a mixture of comedy that mingles with science fiction action. There is some drama, but it does feel downplayed by the humor. There are a lot of moments were the story becomes kind of repetitive from previous films. Even though is feels that there a lot of convinces taken, the character dynamics and the humor make it work. The villain in this film is good, but doesn't as fully developed as he should have. The more humorous approach makes it feel entirely different from the previous two reboot films. The camera is consistently moving with no breaks. But, the effects and the action were great to watch. Chris Pine returned to his role as Captain James T. Kirk. He was great returning to his familiar role. Zachary Quinto returned to the role of Commander Spock. He was good returning to his role as well. Unfortunately, both these roles did not stand out as much as they should have. Sofia Boutella played the role of Jaylah. She was a great balance to the humor in this film. Idris Elba played the role of Krall. He made a decent villain even if he could have been better thought out. There may very well be another sequel for this film.

This film can be seen in theaters!

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! This is a good science fiction film even if the story is slightly lacking.

Suicide Squad

Caution: Thus Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my faebook page!

This film is based off characters created by DC Comics, and a comic series of the same name. The government, lead by Amanda Waller, create a task force using the most dangerous captured criminals to defeat the witch, Enchantress (June Moone) and her brother.

This film was directed and written by David Ayer. Okay, this film is part of the extended universe. So, if you watch the television shows it will be odd watching new actors playing familiar characters. The story is average per the genre. What makes it different is the characters. The villainous characters keep the story from being too familiar or dull. Even if the plot is a little thin, the characters and their interactions make it enjoyable. Oddly, the characters alone were uninspiring and barely explained. This film assumes that its audience knows these characters and their stories. However, much like Superman v. Batman, the story is way to filled with new characters and histories. The action is good for this type of film. The computer animation looks good on screen. The music was a great rocking song list that played nearly every sinister song they could find. There is a planned sequel for this film.

Obviously, there are a lot of characters, so I cannot list all of them. Margot Robbie played the role of Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn. Her performance made this film enjoyable. Strangely, she felt more like the Joker than the Joker. Will Smith played the role of Floyd Lawton/Deadshot. His dark approach worked for the film. It still felt like Will Smith action role, but it worked. Joel Kinnaman played the role of Rick Flag. Sadly, his performance and his character fell by the wayside just a little too much. Cara Delevingne played the role of June Moone/Enchantress. Her performance was great as a trapped woman forced to do evil things. Jay Hernandez played the role of Chato Santana/ El Diablo. His performance created a much needed balance. He was a more serious character to oppose the comedy aspect of the film. Viola Davis played the role of Amanda Waller. Her performance as Waller was amazing. She made this hatred character tolerable. Jared Leto played the role of Joker. Having a film with Harley Quinn will naturally need to include the Joker in some fashion. Unfortantly, the film took too much time focusing on him that it detracted from the story. The performance was decent for the film. He attempted to make the Joker feel more gangster than previous films. However, this approach makes him feel less like the Joker than he needed to be.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is good change in the genre, but it could've been done better.

This film can be seen in theaters.

Finding Dory and Piper

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is the sequel to Finding Nemo. This film follows the story of the amnesiac friend Dory. She sets off on an adventure to locate her missing parents with Nemo and Marlin. Dory makes some new friends and discovers the meaning of family.

This film was directed by Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane. This film is has the same plot as its predecessor (why mess with a working formula, right?). This film isn't great, but it a decent heartwarming adventure. The story will make audiences laugh at its outrageousness and cry at its most sincere moments. The film also does bring more light to human interference. There is also an annoyance with this films need to frequently remind audiences what is happening in the story. It uses this to try to show audiences how Dory's mind is working, but it gets tiring very quickly. Ellen DeGeneres returned as the voice of Dory. She is great returning to this role. There was a fear that following her story would be disastrous, because her character was enjoyable in small amounts. However, her likable nature keeps this film alive. Ed O'Neil voiced the character Hank. He works great with Degeneres. Albert Brooks returned as the voice of Marlin. He has gone from being a main character to the side character. It is a unique change that works for the film. Hayden Rolence voiced the character Nemo. Nemo feels like he's there as a reminder of the films predecessor.

Piper is the animated short that opens Finding Dory. This short is both adorable and heartwarming. This short features some of the best animation I've seen in a while. I give this short 5 out of 5 stars!

This film can be still be seen in theaters!

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great family film that anyone can enjoy.

Max finds himself hating his new brother, Duke. The two clash causing themselves to get lost in the big city. Max's friends set off to rescue them as they try to find their way home.

This film was directed by Yarrow Cheney and Chris Renaud. This film has predictable plot, but the story is humorously adorable. It really does make you begin to wonder what your pets do while your away. It is easy to view your pets among one of the films characters. I was certainly reminded of my own pet cat. This is a great film for children that adults can enjoy as well. Some people will be reminded of other children films, but that has become unfortunately common. There is some morbid humor it, but it works for the film. I did not get a chance to watch it in 3D, but the animation looked great. Louis C.K. voiced the character Max. He is a very heartwarming character. However, this type of character has become highly familiar with these types of films. Eric Stonestreet voiced the character Duke. This character is obviously the comedic best friend. It is apparent even while he fights with Max. Kevin Hart voiced the character Snowball. At times he did become a over the top, but he wasn't on screen enough to hurt the film. Jenny Slate voiced the character Gidget. Her personality does become tiring after a while, but she is likable enough.

This film can be seen in theaters!

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is an adorable family film that will remind audiences about their own pets.

V/H/S and V/H/S 2 and V/H/S: Viral (V/H/S Trilogy)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my page!

The V/H/S trilogy are three anthology horror films that center around seen video tapes that murders its viewer. Each of these films have several different director's creating different stories. Each of these directors were brought together by producer Brad Miska. He brought together a group of people whom he'd had a history with on the Bloody Disgusting website.

V/H/S contains 6 different stories; Tape 56 (narrative film, directed by Adam Wingard), Amateur Night (directed by David Bruckner), Second Honeymoon (directed by Ti West), Tuesday the 17th (directed by Glenn McQuaid), The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger (directed by Joe Swanberg), and 10/31/98 (directed and written by Radio Silence; Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez, and Chad Villella). Tape 56 features a criminal gang that enjoys filming their criminal exploits. They break into a house with a deceased old man and several unmarked vhs tapes. They soon discover that these tapes are hiding some sinister secrets. In Amateur Night, three friends bring women to their hotel room for sex. One of the women is not whom they expected. Second Honeymoon features a young couple traveling in Arizona with a strange woman following them. Tuesday the 17th is a day to travel with friends and search for a killing monster. The Sick Thing ........ features a girlfriend talking to her boyfriend about the threat in her home. In 10/31/98 a group of friends enters a house searching for a party. Entering the wrong house has dangerous consequences.

V/H/S 2 contains 5 stories; Tape 49 (narrative film, directed by Simon Barrett), Phase I Clinical Trials (directed by Adam Wingard), A Ride in the Park (directed by Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale), Safe Haven (directed by Gareth Huw Evans), and Slumber Party Alien Abduction (directed by Jason Eisener). Tape 49 features two detectives who enter a house filled with unmarked tapes to search for a missing boy. In Phase I Clinical Trials Herman receives an ocular implant that allows him to see ghosts. A Ride in the Park features a cyclist named Mike who is turned into a zombie. Safe Haven is about four documentarians that enter the building of a secluded Indonesian cult. Slumber Party Alien Abduction is pretty self explanatory.

V/H/S: Viral contains 4 stories; Vicious Circles (narrative film, directed by Marcel Sarmiento), Dante the Great (directed by Gregg Bishop), Parallel Monsters (directed by Nacho Vigalondo), and Bonestorm (directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead). In Vicious Circles Kevin is taunted by his abducted girlfriend through messages being sent to his phone. These messages also affect others around them. In Dante the Great a magician discovers a cape that gives him magical abilities but only at the expense of consuming humans. Parallel Monster features two men who venture into their respective parallel world. One encounters a world ruled by a very different religion. In Bonestorm a group of skateboarders find themselves being attacked by a cultist group.

Okay, a lot of explanation and a lot of various stories. Okay, all of these stories are told as found footage. Unfortunately, this series was made by someone who does not give a fuck but enjoys the horror premise. Although, in many ways this seems more like a springboard for new directors and actors to get their names out there. Each of the segments is very different. It is so much so that you are bound to find one that is kind of enjoyable. These films are also created for fans of this type of horror genre. The first film is prominently filled with people acting disturbingly stupid. The second film is gorier than its predecessor. The third film, the most disappointing, is just bland. The acting in these films is not great, but it progresses the stories along. None of the overarching stories make much sense and are not too entertaining. The segmented stories are poorly written, and cheaply devised.

This films can be found on Netflix Instant Que.

I give this trilogy a 2 out of 5 stars! (V/H/S receives a 3 out of 5 stars, V/H/S 2 receives a 3 out of 5 stars, and V/H/S: Viral receives a 2 out of 5 stars!)

Warcraft (Warcraft: The Beginning)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based of the Warcraft video game series and novels. Dreanor, the orc home world is dying. Durotan/Antonidas and his family join the horde that travels through a portal generated by fel magic to Azeroth. The horde begins pillaging nearby towns and kidnapping people. Anduin Lothar, King Llane Wrynn's son, enlists the aid of Garona, Khadgar, and Medivh to rescue the people of Azeroth and defeat the horde army.

This film was directed by Duncan Jones. Okay, this is definitely made for the fans of the Warcraft games. There are several references mentioned in the film that newcomers won't understand, or catch. It is also a treat for gamers of this franchise to see their characters brought to life on the big screen. However, there is enough story and explanation so that you won't be lost if you aren't a gamer. That being said, this film does take place in a world full of its own mythologies that it can't take the time to fully explain or present everything. So, there are some races that fall to the wayside until needed. The story is decent enough to be appreciated for fans of fantasy adventure films. There are appropriate moments for humor that balance out the dramatic tension. However, the love story fells highly forced and unneeded. Their are some moments where the story falters, but it does amend itself a little. I cannot say how truthful this film remains to the source material, because I have not played the game. The character's are enjoyable to watch on screen. Even if their names are a mouthful that no one will remember (except for gamers). There's some unique imagery and camerawork used to help progress the story. There is a lot of computer animation in this film. Most of it works except for a few small mistakes.

Travis Fimmel plays the role of Anduin Lothar. It is good to see this actor on the big screen. However, I am strongly reminded of his character on the small screen (Vikings). He creates a unique character that is both humorously playful and dramatically serious. Paula Patton plays the role Garona. Even though they put too much emphasizes on her enslavement and her unnatural beauty, she is enjoyable to watch. Toby Kebbel played the role of Durotan and Archmage Antonidas. His performance was the best of the cast, because it really brought an understanding to the orc characters. Ben Schnetzer played the role of Khadgar. He was the comedic relief for the film. It worked even if it did become kinda of tiring. Ben Foster played the role of Medivh. His performance suited the character well, but it could've been a little more heartfelt. Daniel Wu played the role of Gul'dan. He made an impressive villain that the film really didn't take time to develop.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent fantasy film created for fans of the game franchise.

This film can be seen in theaters.

Room

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the novel with the same name written by Emma Donoghue. Jack and his mother, Joy, escape from the room that they were imprisoned in for seven (entirety of Jack's life). Jack's imagination aids him as he discovers a strange world outside of the room, and watches his mothers struggles.

This film was directed by Lenny Abrahamson. It is great knowing that the author of the novel also wrote the screenplay. The story of this film hits a very dark and emotional nerve that can be jarring. That being said, by telling the story from the perspective of the son it opens the film to imagination and keeps it from being intensely depressing. It also offers a new variation to a familiar story. It is was also great that this film focused on the characters instead of generating needless action or morbid horror. Jacob Tremblay played the role of Jack. His astounding performance drove the film to its emotional peak. Brie Larson played the role of Ma/Joy. Her emotional performance created the image of a broken and compassionate mother.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great dramatic film with amazing performances.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is based off the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind written by Mitch Cullin. The story is also loosely based off the character Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 93 year old Sherlock Holmes is retired and struggling with early dementia.Holmes gains the assistance of his housekeepers son to remember his last case and remember the woman who haunts his thoughts.

This film was directed by Bill Condon. Okay, this film strips away everything that audiences have become familiar with pertaining to Sherlock Holmes. There is very little action. Even though there are entertaining mysteries there isn't much for thrills or excitement. The story rebukes the classic novels by stating that they were exaggerations to make him more worthwhile. However, his character remains as distant and unapproachable as ever, but softens through his revelations. The story is a great dramatic story about old age. However, if the central character was not Mr. Holmes then it would be a great dramatic tale. Ian McKellen played the role of Sherlock Holmes. McKellen was great as a troubled Sherlock Holmes. His emotional performance made an unlikable character sorrowful. Milo Parker played the role of Roger. He was a great supporting actor for McKellen. He opened the character of Sherlock Holmes for the audience. Laura Linney played the role of Mr.s Munro. In various ways, she feels like a reminder of Mrs. Hudson.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It has superb acting and a great dramatic story. It just doesn't fell like a familiar Sherlock Holmes.

This film can be seen on DVD.

Judy Hopps, a rabbit police detective, takes on a case to locate one of the missing animals living within Zootopia. Judy enlists the help of a cunning fox, Nick Wilde. Judy quickly discovers that something is turning predatory animals wild.

This film was directed by Bryan Howard and Rich Moore. This film is entirely unique within the Disney 'verse. It offers some very deep, and thoughtful, messages while keeping it entertaining to children. The humor used in it works for both adults and children. The story is great and simple. I enjoyed that it managed to hold some surprises for the ending. I also enjoyed how this film created a very unique world for these characters to thrive in. It also helps that the world is very open to changes, offering it a constant fresh look. The characters are also very original and believable. There isn't any singing in this film, apart from Gazelle. Ginnifer Goodwin voiced the character Judy Hopps. She delivered a great and emotional performance. Her playful personality was well suited for this character. Jason Bateman voiced the character Nick Wilde. Bateman's performance worked great with Goodwin. His calm and sly personality also offered a different perspective.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great animated classic that most audiences will enjoy.

This film can be seen in Theaters.

If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Father Lozano witnesses strange events happening around a young woman, Angela. Believing her to be possessed, he sends hospital tapes to the Vatican. Cardinal Bruun is sent to assist Father Lozano with an exorcism.

This film was directed by Mark Neveldine. This film follows many of the familiar tropes of possession movies. It tries to offer something new with the genre, but fails to do. Even though this film has a creepy factor to it there are no real scares. There is nothing that makes any sequence stand out as truly frightening. I did enjoy the deception of a good hearted girl next door they used for the ending. Sadly, I think a lot the films too clean focus kept it from being frightening. Olivia Taylor Dudley (Olivia Dudley) played the role of Angela. She did a decent job at playing a frightened possessed victim, but not as a demon. Michael Pina played the role of Father Lozano. He was a good supporting actor who didn't spend as much time on screen as he should have.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! This tries to be original, but fails to do so.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is about Phillippe Petit's high wire walk in between the twin towers of the world trade center. It was also dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks. This film follows Phillippe Petit as he plans to do a hire wire walk in between the twin towers, and what followed.

This film was directed by Robert Zemeckis. At first this film seems dull, but the character of Petit keeps you interested. As the film turns into a coup it begins to improve. Then the actual 'walk' sequence makes this film worth the watch. Although, it is not for those who have a fear of heights because the sequence takes great effort to make audiences feel like they are there. Joseph Gordon-Levitt played the role of Phillppe Petit. He did wonderful at creating a neurotic artist. At times his character could be tiring and over the top, but it worked for the film. Charlotte Le Bon played the role of Annie. She was good at supporting Gordon-Levitt.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! The ending sequence makes it a great film, but the rest of the film doesn't keep the hype.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is based off the novel Y pese a todo written by Juan De Dios Garduno. Lu is living with her father, Jack, in a safe city where with a neighbor, Patrick. Lu has grown curious about the neighbor that her dad forbids her to speak to. They also discover that the virus that destroyed the world has evolved.

This film was directed by Miguel Angel Vivas. The zombies are a backdrop to the character story. The film takes a lot of time to establish these characters and explain their history. Even though there aren't many zombies shown, it has an action packed ending. The icy backdrop adds a small element to creepiness. The zombie variations are unique and frightening for the brief time that they appear on screen. There can be some arguments that they aren't true zombies, but that's only for the die hard fans. Jeffrey Donovan played the role of Jack. This actors lifeless performance suited the film. Quinn McColgan played the role of Lu. She was a great supporting actress for Donovan and Fox. Matthew Fox played the role of Patrick. He was good for his role.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It has a lot of potential that it doesn't fulfill.

This film is based off Marvel's comic character with the same name, and is considered the eight installment to the X-Men franchise. After Wade Wilson discovers that he has cancer, he agrees to undergo a torturous transformation that will give him mutant genes to save his life. He gets betrayed, and seeks revenge on the scientist that created and disfigured him.

This film was directed by Tim Miller. Before you ask, yes, this film is full of mature content. It is full of sexual innuendo's and violence. Because of this, it breaks the traditional mold of recent superhero films. The story itself is simple and classic, but the characters make it enjoyable. Its breaking of the fourth wall makes this film unique. It also gains its uniqueness in that the main character is not your typical hero. The action in this film is great to watch on screen. The computer animation turned out great. The fully computer generated character looked believable on screen. There are plans to make a sequel, and there is an ending clip after the film. Ryan Reynolds played the role of Wade Wilson/Deadpool. He was great in this role. Stefan Kapicic voiced the character Colossus. He was great at opposing Reynolds' less heroic image. Ed Skrein played the role of Ajax. He was a great villain for this film, but didn't stand out too much. Morena Baccarin played the role of Vanessa. She was a great supporting actress.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It offers a refreshing twist on superhero films.

This film can be seen in theaters.

In New York, 1981, Abel Morales is an ambitious immigrant who struggles to protect and expand his oil business. His struggles become worse has his truck drivers continue to get attacked, and the government conducts an financial investigation.

This film was directed and written by J.C. Chandor, This film's story has a very slow build-up. It can be easy to lose focus. There is some tension, but a lot of it feels unimportant. This is a character driven story with much only being hinted (never really spoken about). Using the cities known violent year adds a great undertone to the story of a rising businessman. There is some violence in it, but there isn't much. This film isn't a high impact thriller like the title would suggest. Fortunately, the performances were great enough to keep this film from being too dull. Oscar Isaac played the role of Abel Morales. He was great at creating a collected character with emotions bubbling under the surface. Although, it was strange that this character never really reached a breaking point. Jessica Chastain played the role of Anna Morales. She was great at supporting Isaac.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a good film despite its slow pace.

Programmer Caleb Smith wins a one week trip to his eccentric billionaire bosses house. Shortly after his arrival, he agrees to take part in a Turing test on an android to determine if she has artificial intelligence.

This film was directed and written by Alex Garland. What I really enjoyed about this film is that its a thriller by using intelligent script writing instead of the typical chase. It relies more on its mind tricks than on its effects or action. The robotic design was great to watch on screen. What little animation was used only added to the film. The nature backdrop gave the film an eerie peaceful feeling. There isn't much violence, but there is a lot of sexuality. Domhnall Gleeson played the role of Caleb. He was great in his emotional and intelligent role. Oscar Isaac played the role of Nathan. He was great at opposing Glesson in every way. Alicia Vikander played the role of Ava. She was great in her supporting role. She created an alluring and frightening image.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great science-fiction thriller that makes you wonder about our future as the human race.

This film is a sequel to the film Sinister. Deputy So and So has lost his job because of the incidents that happened to the Oswalt family. He's spent years following the demon, Bughuul, and trying to stop him by burning down previous homes where families were brutally murdered. He comes to another house to discover a mother and her two sons (the Collins) living there. Deputy So and So decides to aid this family and learns more about Bughuul.

This film was directed by Ciaran Foy. There are many elements of this film that'll remind audiences of the original. However, this film is told mostly from the perspective of the children. This perspective change, as it turns out, causes a huge change in how the tale is told. Sadly, it does feel like this film disliked the previous films unhappy ending, and instead made a happier ending. The video deaths were a lot more gruesome and intricate. As frightening as they were, they were unbelievable. Yes, there is a lot of gore. James Ransone played the role of Ex-Deputy So and So. It was strange watching the unlikable Deputy in this film, but made sense. Robert Sloan (Robert Daniel Sloan) played the role of Dylan Collins. He was great in creating an emotional character to follow, but he does remain too childlike. Dartanian Sloan played the role of Zach Collins. He was great at opposing D. Collins. I was surprised to find myself hating this child so much. Shannyn Sossamon played the role of Courtney Collins. She was good motherly figure for this film.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It is a decent horror film on its own, but it fails as a sequel to the first film.

This film is based off the Marvel comic's character from a superteam, with the same name. This is also a remake of the previous Fantastic Four film. Reed Richards spends his life working on a teleporter device to discover a new world. After it works, Richards, Ben Grimm, Victor Doom, and Johnny Storm secretly use it. They each, along with Sue Storm, mutate and generate a new ability.

This film was directed by Josh Trank. Okay, this film was worse than the previous take on this franchise. This film's story only takes small elements from the original source material, and forces them to work. For some strange reason, a group of young teenagers were pulled into being scientists. The adoption element makes the least amount of sense. In many ways, it appears that this film attempts to take various cliches from popular superhero films and forces them to work together. It also felt like this story didn't have a focused emotion. It attempted to be dark and comedic at the same time. However, the computer animation worked well for this film. The backdrop for the alien planet was interesting to look at. There might be a sequel with the same cast to maintain company rights, but it is questionable. The lifeless acting that comes from the main cast only further hurts this film. Miles Teller played the role of Reed Richards. His very lifeless acting truly ruined the film. It hurt more, because he was the central character. Toby Kebbell played the role of Victor Von Doom. It is unfortunate that his mutated form was uninteresting. His general performance was also lackluster. Michael B. Jordan played the role of Johnny Storm. He had the most life of the entire cast, but not enough. Kate Mara played the role of Sue Storm. She was great for supporting Teller and Kebbell, and not much else. Jamie Bell played the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing. The animation for his character was great. He also brought some life to the film, but was hardly on screen.

I give this film 1 out of 5 stars! It was a very lackluster film that felt uninspiring.

This film can be seen on DVD.

The Revenant (2015)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is a semi-autobiographical film about Hugh Glass loosely based off Michael Punke's novel, The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge. In the 1820's, Hugh Glass is a frontiersman on a fur trading expedition. After being mauled by a bear and the death of his son, Glass decides to seek revenge.

This film was directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. I can't say how true it was historically, or to its source material. What could've been an standard revenge story becomes a dark heart wrenching tale, because of the performances of the actors and the cinematography choices. The survival story of Glass was as amazing to watch as it was disturbing. If you know the director, you'll be used to the film style. If not, then it might take some getting used to. What makes it great is that it offers a personal feeling to being an observer. The nature scenes are beautiful, and a little overplayed. Before you ask, yes there is violence. Leonardo DiCaprio played the role of Hugh Glass. DiCaprio's physical and emotional performance really makes this film great. The camera only adds to his performance. Tom Hardy played the role of John Fitzgerald. I'll be honest, I could not recognize him in this film. He was a great actor to oppose DiCaprio.

This film can be seen in theaters.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! Even if it is dark and grisly, it is a great film about survival and revenge.

This film is based off the events that led to the death of Oscar Grant III in Oakland, California. On New Year's Day of 2009, 22 year old Oscar is a Bay Area resident who meets with family, friends, and strangers before his death.

This film was written and directed by Ryan Coogler. This film works to put a face, and an image, of the man who was murdered by a police officer. It does keep to the positive aspects of the main character, and make the police appear as a distant enemy. The cinematography, and the script, work wonderfully together by not being overly glamorized; which gives it a more realistic feel. In many ways, knowing the ending just gives this film an eerie vibe. The film does remain respectful to those who've lost someone they loved, and delivers its message about police violence. Michael B. Jordan played the role of Oscar Grant III. He was great at showing the character's kindness under a tough exterior. In many ways, he gave the film its cry for forgiveness. Melonie Diaz played the role of Sophina. She was a great supporting actress for Jordan.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great film that commemorates the life of Oscar Grant III.

Justine travels with a group of social activists to protect the rainforest natives from a logging company. After their protest achieves some success, their plane crashes. Their troubles change when the cannibal natives kidnap the survivors.

This film was directed by Eli Roth. Anyone who knows Eli Roth, and his style, will know what they're getting into with this film. Much of it was inspired from classic cannibal films (i. e. Cannibal Holocaust). The plot is fairly straightforward, people trying to survive and escape from enraged natives. However, the commentary it makes on social activists is unique. There are several moments when the film tries to create humor to balance out the tension, but it only cheapens the experience. There are several unnerving moments though. There is plenty of violence, and some gore. A lot of the true horror is suggested. There was some controversy form actual activists who claimed that it was making natives look dangerous. Yes, there is a sequel planned. Lorenza Izzo played the role of Justine. She was good at portraying the general survival victim. Ariel Levy played the role of Alejandro. He was brilliant at creating the most hated character in this film.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! Its a great film for fans of Eli Roth, or general gore fans. However, it also has its faults.

King Arthur

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is a re-telling of the classic King Arthur legends that attempts to incorporate some history into the legend.

This film was directed by Antione Fuqua. This film has been marketed has being a more historically accurate portrayal of the King Arthur legend, but it took so many artistic licenses that it isn't very accurate. In having done so, it was also claimed to have been plagiarized from the non-fictional novel The Last Legion.  All that tossed aside, the plot is familiar to the genre; a man fights for the freedom of the natives against tyranny. Even though it is unclear who their true enemy is, because there appears to be many. Although there are some things that remain unexplained, and only hinted at, the overall story is good. This film also has a great ending battle sequence. Sadly, there were not of unnecessary marketing attempts to make this film more marketable and all those attempts failed. There is a director's cut that adds in more gore and a deeper love triangle. What really saves this film is the performances given by the cast. Clive Owen played the role of Arthur. His performance gave the film its heart and motivation. Ioan Gruffudd played the role of Lancelot. This film does offer some confusion as to whom the main character is. Gruffudd's performance was great for supporting Owen; however, the most of the story follows him and he is the narrator. But, he too easily overshadowed. Keira Knightly played the role of Guinevere. She was a great supporting actress in a familiar role.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! There are a few saving graces, but overall the film wasn't highly entertaining.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

The Gallows

Caution: This Might contain spoilers!

20 years, there was a school accident during the stage production of The Gallows. Now, to honor the anniversary of the tragedy the school has decided to produce it again. Three friends break into the school theater at night, and quickly realize that something is amiss.

This dilm was written and directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing. This is another found footage film with a ghost monster. In many ways, it feels too much like its trying to set-up for a sequel. The plot remains very simple and predictable. The only thing new this film has to offer is that there was limited use of computer animation, and the actors performing their own stunt work. There are a few jump scares, but nothing really creepy or violent. The monster wasn't very frightening, and felt too inorganic. The very non-dimensional characters didn't help either. Reese Mishler played the role of Reese Houser. There wasn't much to make his character stand out. Pfeifer Brown played the role of Pfeifer Ross. She was easily forgotten. Ryan Shoos played the role of Ryan Shoos. His character begins as the most irritating idiot, and ends on the same note. Cassidy Gifford played the role of Cassidy Spilker. She felt like one of the most useless characters in the film.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It is another found footage ghost film that fails to deliver any real scares.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is a remake of a 1996 Japanese film, with the same title. John Clark is a bored and overworked estate lawyer. On his way home, he see's a beautiful instructor, Paulina, standing in an open window. The sight of her encourages him to take ballroom dancing classes. There he begins to rediscover his lost passion for life.

This film was directed by Peter Chelsom. I haven't seen the original version to be able to compare the two. However, this romantic comedy did surprise me. It balanced humor and quirkiness with some drama. When you think its beginning to droll on, or follow a familiar plot, it changes course enough to keep it interesting. The story is easier for an older audience to enjoy. The subtle humor was great, and the romance was believable. It was also pleasant to watch a more classical version of dance on screen. Richard Gere played the role of John Clark. He was great for his role. He gave this character enough depth to make him relatable. Jennifer Lopez played the role of Paulina. Her presence, on screen, was enough to fill in for her lack of words.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a sweet romantic comedy that'll make you curious about dancing.

Anna Brady, feeling desperate, decides to travel to Dublin, Ireland to propose to her long time boyfriend (as is tradition). Anna finds her quickly facing several unforeseen obstacles. She adds another, when she asks Declan O'Callaghan to drive her to Dublin.

This film was directed by Anand Tucker. This romantic comedy follows a very familiar rom-com plot. It also ends on a very predictable note. However, this film doesn't offer anything new, or exciting, to the genre so the film just kind of meanders on. There were some complaints that the film doesn't represent the Irish people in a good light. However, the backdrop of Ireland was stunning to watch. Amy Adams played the role of Anna Brady. Her familiar cute nature comes through in this film. Even though her performance keeps this film entertaining, there isn't anything great it either. Matthew Goode played the role of Declan O'Callaghan. Unfortunately, there wasn't much excitement to his character. During the course of the film, he just feels like he's annoyed to be there.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! A decent actress wasn't enough to make this film great.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

This film is the seventh installment of the Rocky franchise, and acts as both a spin-off and a sequel. Adonis Johnson decides to quite his job to become a professional boxer like deceased father Apollo Creed. Adonis travels to Philadelphia in hopes of getting his fathers' old friend and rival, Rocky Balboa, to train him.

This film was directed by Ryan Coogler. Okay, this film follows pretty much the same story pattern of the original Rocky film. Fortunately, it followed the same with enough small changes to keep it interesting. This formula also works for these types of films in a great way. I enjoyed the return to the hard gritty roots where wealth was limited. The action in this film was great. It worked with the film instead of hindering it. Yes, there will be another sequel to this film. Michael B. Jordan played the role of Adonis Johnson. He was perfect for this role. Not only did he accomplish the physical aspect, but he also hit all emotional moments with ease. Sylvester Stallone returned to the role of Rocky Balboa. It was unique watching him returning to his familiar, but not being the main focus. He was a great supporting actor for Jordan. Tess Thompson played the role of Bianca. She was a great supporting actress for Jordan, and looked great on screen.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great way to keep the Rocky franchise from ending.

This film can be seen in theaters for a limited time.

A scientifically curious teenager, Casey Newton, and a former boy genius, Frank Walker, are brought together by a robot, Athena. Together they go to a strange community that is locked someplace within time and space to change an apocalyptic future.

This film was directed by Brad Bird. Okay this film is an advertisement for Disneyland parks mixed with the basic premise of Atlas Shrugged. At the heart of all this is mission to deliver a message: you create your own future, so work hard to improve it. In the beginning of the story, there is some excitement with the mystery and growing curiosity about this new world. However, as more layers a revealed the story loses its audiences interest. Unfortunately, the big emotional ending came off feeling unimportant. In many, it would appear that this film became to ambitious with its message and stunning visuals. As much as I enjoyed the classic Disney throwbacks, it quickly became way too much. I will say though, it was impressive to watch women in stronger and intelligent roles. Britt Laurie played the role of Casey Newton. Her performance was typical for the teenage rebel with a kind heart. She did offer enough emotion to make the film's story sincere. George Clooney played the role of Frank Walker. His performance was good, for a supporting actor, but not great. Raffey Cassidy played the role of Athena. She was adorable to watch on screen. But her character's lack of emotion made her forgettable.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It has a lot of ambition, but it fails to deliver.

This film can be seen on DVD.
