Guy Trilby is a forty year old man who had dropped out of eight grade. Through a loophole, he enters the National Quill Spelling Bee. Guy offers no explanation for joining the spelling bee, and continues against the wishes of several parents. Ten year old Chaitanya Chopra befriends Guy during the spelling bee tournament.

This film was directed by Jason Bateman. The story for this film is as unbelievable as it is plausible. Guy remains the most unlikable character mainly because of his selfishness and rude behavior. However, his character is counteracted by the adorable ten year old Chopra. Through there friendship comes the warmth the film needed. The film is not side splitting funny. The film does have its humorous moments that stem from the unexpected behavior of the main character. The dark humor kind of tears at the film's heart which keeps it from being overly familiar, and often makes it feel more like a drama. This definitely isn't a family film. Jason Bateman played the role of Guy Trilby. He creates the most despicable character possible with a very small heart. Rohan Chand played the role of Chaitanya Chopra. He takes the annoying child role and turns it upside down. The minor annoyance of the character is coupled with his unexpected behavior to offer support to Bateman's character.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good comedy film that masks the heart of it. However, without any opportunity to view much softness from the leading character the film leaves a distaste that many will not enjoy.

This film is loosely based on the novel, with the same title, written by Michel Faber. A female alien wears the skin and clothes of a human while traveling the streets of Scotland in a large white van. As she travels the streets she seduces men to have them sent back to her home planet. Meeting a man with Neurofibromatosis forces her to change her perspective.

This film was directed by Jonathan Glazer. Okay, this film has received much acclaim from critics who enjoy the surrealist ideal. To several audience members this film is just strange. The story is meant to be shown from the perspective of the alien which makes the world into a confusing mess. There isn't much explained during the course of the film, but the images present enough to showcase the character's transformation. In whole, this is another minimalist retelling of the Frankenstein story. There isn't much dialogue used, but it works for the film. This keeps the audience watching the sequence of scenes. The few moments of dialogue are hard to understand anyway. This is not a horror film, but it is a creepy film. There is plenty of dark undertones to it, but nothing to overly terrify its audience. There also isn't a ton of blood and guts, but it still has plenty of violence. The backdrop for this film was gorgeous to view on screen. The creature animation was impressive. Scarlett Johansson played the main character/the woman. She created the ideal unnerving seductive siren that the film needed. As the film progress', it is easy to understand the character's attempts at being human without any dialogue.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It might be a strange film, but it has several good qualities that can't be ignored. It also showcases the talents of a talented actress.

Valentin Bravo finds his greatest fears realized when one of his former lovers leaves their daughter in his care. Valentin travels to America in hopes of returning the baby to the birth mother, but instead discovers a life he never expected to have. Six years later, their life becomes threatened when the birth mother reemerges.

This film was directed by Eugenio Derbez. This film is mainly in spanish with english bits added. It also feels more like a foreign film than an American film. The plot frequently changes its emotional tone, but not so severe that it hinders the overall story. There is a lot of humor in this story. The humor can often overpower its emotional core. There is an unexpected ending that is set-up during the film, but does not fit with the rest of the story. It also prolongs the points of the story that can feel long but work for the films ending. The conflicting ideas and tones also come together for the stories conclusion. Since this plays like a foreign film, a lot of the secondary characters are over the top. Much of the films heart comes from the connection the two main actors share on screen. Eugenio Derbez played the role of Valentin Bravo. He was great offering the film its comedic heart. Loreto Peralta played the role of Maggie Bravo. She was surprisingly great in her role. She didn't create the annoying or needy child. Instead she created a character that was full of heart and naivety.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! This is an entertaining lighthearted film that a family could enjoy together.

This film is based on the life and struggles of Cesar Chavez. In the 1960's and 1970's, Chavez organized a group of 50,000 farm workers (mostly braceros) with a union in order to improve farm working conditions.

This film was directed by Diego Luna. This film has been presented at a time when immigration and rights are being highly argued. In many ways this film feels like a reminder to keep human rights as the main platform for these arguments. The story is very simply told with obvious characters. It has only one real character, and the others are merely present. This biopic film spends a lot of time making Cesar into a hero without question. The film also explains that politics in a very understandable method that adds to the heroism of the main character. There is nothing to complicate this story in anyway; which gives it a slight bias. There is also no real emotion pull to the characters or to their plight. Only at the end, is the needed depth added to the film. This film is in both spanish and english, but mostly english. Michael Pena played the role of Cesar Chavez. It is easy to see the characters views, but there needed to be more emotion shown on screen.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! Being the first film about him, it was not bad. It works as a biographical film, but it does not tug enough to gather the following it needs.

Son of God (2013)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!

This film is based off the Biblical testament, and was adapted from the ten hour miniseries entitled The Bible from the History Channel. This follows Jesus' teachings, his trail, and his crucifixion.

This film was directed by Christopher Spencer. This is his first directorial debut outside of televised documentaries. The story is typical to what is preached in church, complete with the most popular religious phrases. There is not much historical accuracy outside of what is mentioned in the Bible and what has been researched on this religious topic. However, this film does keep with recent historical research in that it makes changes to previous tellings of this story. Mary Magdalene is only a follower, and is no longer the prostitute. There is no featured deviled in this film, and God only remains a spoken about entity. This film keeps its focus on the people present and the events that happened to them. This film is also very cleanly done and an obvious church service. This can make it dull, but still emotional. Unlike previous films, it shows more about how he gained followers and about the threat he created to those of power. The special effects are not great, but showcase the point. This film was established more for followers than for general audiences. Apart from making Jesus a fully developed character, all other characters remain to secondary to be of any importance. Sebastian Knapp played the role of John. His character's only purpose, other than being a follower, was being the narrator. There was nothing to establish him from the other followers. Diogo Morgado played the role of Jesus Christ. He was great in the role-creating the typical variation of Jesus.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a great film for those who already follow this religion, but it not a great general film.

This film is based off characters created by Marvel Comics. Shortly after the death of his mother, Peter Quill is abducted by alien thieves. Years later, Peter steals an orb coveted by Ronan the Accuser and Thanos. Each will do anything to obtain this powerful object. Peter Quill, and his prison escapee's will try to stop them.

This film was directed by James Gunn. This film, from its success, will become a franchise starter. There is a lot familiar to modern super hero fans. However, this film makes the super hero genre available for science fiction audiences. The light heartedness comes from the breaking the familiar emotional mood or romantic mood with character comedy that works for the film. The story has the most unusual beginning that sets the light felt emotional tone for the film. It also makes the film more than just a comical action showcase. The remainder of film's story remains just as strange in that it takes very dark moments and satires them with the character's reactions. The story itself frequently changes narratives to establish the world around these characters. Interesting enough, it adds more to the Avenger's universe. Making this fit into the Avenger's world, and creating a new one, works for the film but was unnecessary. This could've very easily been a stand alone franchise. Audiences who have not seen the Avenger's, or any form of film connected to it, may not get all the additional characters and references. This film also stands apart from modern superhero films in that it also has more open sexual references without any actual sex. Alongside the comedy is action. The action is different in that it is more computer animated based than physical. A lot of this film is computer animated; which creates a lot of stunning visual sequences. The music is all classic rock style which is unusual for science fiction films-but it gives a classic feeling to it. There are two ending sequences to this film, and only one should be seen. The first appears directly after the film and is adorable. The second does not tell anything about future films, but reminds audiences of a past film (Howard the Duck). This film had a lot that could've gone wrong, but managed to make it work very well.

The cast worked well together keeping the film from becoming over the top or cheesy. Chris Pratt played the role of Peter Quill. He offered a new image to the male super hero in that he isn't always perfect. A lot of the time he says the wrong things and prefers being a thief to a hero. He also offers the film a lot of comedy by not being the typical male hero. Zoe Saldana played the role of Gamora. She did return to a familiar female action hero role, but she kept this character realistic through her lack of understanding. Dave Bautista played the role of Drax. His character was the most heartfelt, but also comedic. His character's brutality was not overplayed. Bradley Cooper voiced the character Rocket. His character was highly crude, but in an understandable way. Vin Diesel voiced the character Groot. With only a single line, his character became (surprisingly) the most sincere and impressive on screen performance. Lee Pace played the role of Ronan the Accuser. He created a great villain that stood alongside of Thanos. Karen Gillan played the role of Nebula. From a Doctor Who hero to a Marvel villain worked great. Michael Rooker played the role of Yondu Udonta. He was his familiar comedic self on screen.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great addition to the Marvel universe, and a great comedic summer science fiction film.
