Knock Knock (2015)

This film is a remake of a 1977 film entitled Death Game. Even Webber is a devoted father left home alone. On this stormy night, two young girls appear pleading for his help. The night quickly turns into a night of seduction; which leads to a game of cat and mouse.

This film was directed by Eli Roth. This film is meant to be a twist on home invasion where the women are femme fatales. However, the two female characters only manage to come off as annoying and troublesome. It also doesn't help that it's impossible to view Keanu Reeves as helpless. But, the change does offer a fresh take on this popular genre. Just as it was intriguing to witness a man being raped on screen. The films satirical approach to 'torture horror' came off as too cheesy to be believable. Even though it has its twist, there are no real tense moments of suspense or horror to terrify its audience. The film also creates some predictable and uninteresting characters. Keanu Reeves played the role of Evan Webber. Despite not being able to see him as helpless, he was good in his role. He made the role as sincere as he could. Lorenza Izzo played the role of Genesis. Her performance felt unmotivated, but playful. Ana de Armas played the role of Bel. Her character was the clingy sexual follower. In many ways she was annoying, but it worked out.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! Despite having an original twist on a classic genre, it fails to create any real suspense.

David Collins approaches the Peterson family claiming to be an old war friend of their eldest son, Caleb. Shortly after the Peterson family allows him to stay with them, several accidental deaths occur that improve their lives. Anna Peterson, the oldest sister, is the only one who believes that these accidental deaths are connected to David.

This film was directed by Adam Wingard. This film is an action thriller that harkens back to an eighties film feel. There are plenty of action thrills and dark sequences to make this film entertaining. The ending felt satisfactory, but felt like it could've been more. However, it is very predictable. Naturally, there is plenty of violence, but I wouldn't call it gorey. I will say that this film features a group of very unintelligent characters. Maika Monroe played the role of Anne Peterson. Even though she played a typical rebellious daughter role, she gave the film its heart and some humor. Dan Stevens played the role of David Collins. His on screen presence made the character. Brendan Meyer played the role of Luke Peterson. His character was made too typical of the outcast teenager, and his performance suited the character.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a great thriller film that feels too typical.

Pan (2015)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is a prequel to J. M. Barrie's stageplay Peter Pan. Peter is kidnapped from his orphanage by pirates and taken to Neverland. There he discovers secrets about his mother, and his fate to protect the fairy kingdoms.

This film was directed by Joe Wright. This is offers a unique perspective on the origin story of Peter Pan. The story has a lot of potential. But it attempts to be too intelligent and creative that it neglects to present the childhood innocence and mischievous nature of Pan. It is humorously that it tries to reconnect with the original by offering innuendo's, and keep itself PC. I've recently noticed that modern children movies have chosen to take popular songs and re-use them instead of creating original music, and this film is no different. The steampunk and fantastical backdrop was great to watch on screen. The computer animation was overbearing, but looked pretty. Levi Miller played the role of Peter Pan. He was good at creating a sincere character. Garrett Hedlund played the role of Hook. His performance was over the top and too comical. Rooney Mara played the role of Tiger Lily. She was nice to watch on screen, but felt flat. Hugh Jackman played the role of Blackbeard. His performance was way too over the top, but it is easy to see how a cartoon version of Hook would've taken behavioral traits from him.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! Good computer animation isn't enough to rescue this expensive children's film from its problems.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This film is the seventh film installment to the Star Wars film franchise, and is based off characters created by George Lucas. Thirty years after the destruction of the second death star, the First Order has arisen from the ashes of the Galactic Empire. They seek to destroy what remains of the Resistance, led by Leia Organa, and to destroy the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker. Now, a group of unlikely hero's will emerge to aide the Resistance and find Luke.

This film was directed by J. J. Abrahams. Okay, this film was obviously made to excite the fans of the classic saga, and amend the mistakes made with the prequels. However, non-fans of the Star Wars franchise will not easily enjoy this film. But, there are lot of little details that if thought about too hard could ruin the fun. There are some new planets, new secondary characters, and a new government that is introduced and not fully explained. They also leave a lot of hints about various aspects of the star wars 'verse that only die-hard fans would appreciate. There is also a lot of filler, in this story, that feels too much like filler. Once you've gotten to the ending, however, it all comes together nicely. Even if it does tread some way too familiar plot points. In many ways it feel like it tries to amend the prequels by providing the fans what they've been craving, but does not reach the point of greatness that the original series established. Fortunately, the story is dramatic enough and a thrilling fun ride that most can enjoy it. This film has managed to lessen the little on screen violence even more so than the previous films. There is some great computer animation, backdrops, and alien/robotic designs to offer plenty originality to the film. It'll be interesting to see what a different director brings to the plate.

Thankfully, the story did take the time to create three new primary characters, and allow the audience to understand them. The re-introduction of the classic old characters was great-even if it felt overburdened. The main characters really gave this film its heart. I did enjoy that all the big name actors were given small roles, and new actors were used to give the film a fresh feel. Daisy Ridley played the role of Rey. It was great watching a strong female character on screen kicking butt. John Boyega played the role of Finn/FN2187. His performance offered tons of comedy for the film. Adam Driver played the role of Kylo Ren. Unfortunately, he had a lot to live up to. He is literally treading in the footsteps of Darth Vader. He did not have the same presence, but you knew that he was an intimidating villain. Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill returned to their roles of Han Solo, Chewbacca, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker. Their return was great and memorable. Bringing back R2-D2 and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) was a little much, but nice. The introduction of new robot BB-8 was great.

This film can be seen in theaters.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great science fiction drama film that many audiences can enjoy.

The Conspiracy (2012)

Caution; This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy this blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Jim and Aaron decide to create a documentary about a conspiracy theorist; Ian Anderson. After Ian Anderson disappears, the documentary takes a strange and dangerous.

This film was directed by Christopher MacBride. Okay, this is a faux documentary film told through found footage. This film starts slow, but it builds suspense quickly. It ends the film by generating an even bigger conspiracy than what it began with-which is great. In a strange the found footage/faux documentary works great for this type of film. However, like most found footage it still feels like we're not getting the complete story. It is more of a suspenseful film than it is a horror. There isn't any gore, but there are questions asked about our government. Aaron Poole played the role of Aaron. James Gilbert played the role of Jim. They were both good at playing off each other in the obvious roles of non-believer and believer. However, either performer can be easily interchanged.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a good suspenseful film that makes use of the found footage formula.

Texas Ranger Samantha Payne re-opens a fifteen year old case involving the disappearance of a young boy. She accuses local rancher Scott Briggs. This forces Scott Briggs to rethink his life.

This film was directed and written by Robert Duvall. The films story has two distinct characters living different lives who occasionally run into each other. The film would've done much better having followed one or the other. That being said, it is primarily an emotional about a father trying to mend his broken family before his death. The story takes several unexpected turns that make it feel like an soap opera drama. Sadly, there is a lot of build-up in this film but there is no fulfillment in the ending. Robert Duvall played the role of Scott Briggs. In truth, there is nothing likable about this character but he can be respected as a struggling father. James Franco played the role of Ben Briggs. He brought the most heart to this film. Josh Hartnett played the role of KC Briggs. He was great at supporting Franco. Angie Cepeda played the role of Maria Gonzales. She easily upstaged all the other performers in this film. Devon Abner played the role of Johnny Briggs. Even though there are three brothers in this family, and the father is trying to mend that family, he is the most unnecessary character in this film. He is also the easiest forgotten. Luciana Duvall (Luciana Pedraza) played the role of Samantha Payne. Her performance was lackluster, but the character was interesting for the limited time that she was on screen.

This film can be seen on Netflix Instant Que.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It is a film that tries to be a family drama without any true direction.

Damian Hale is a wealthy real state mogul whose dying from cancer. Damian decides to undergo a procedure to place his conscious into another body. However, Damian quickly discovers the secrets of the company who conducted the procedure.

This film was directed by Tarsem Singh. This film goes the typical route of becoming an action film. Which is unfortunate, because this film refrains from asking the deep psychological questions that could've made this film unique. It also doesn't place much focus on character development. This is also unfortunate since the film revolves around the central character's emotional development. The plot is very predictable. However, the action sequences are decent but not highly thrilling. Even though the backdrops a lovely to look at this film doesn't have the director's known artistic style. Ryan Reynolds played the role of Young Damian. Ben Kingsley played the role of Damian. When there are two actors playing the same role in different, it can very easily become difficult for one to cop the other. However, Kingsley wasn't on screen long enough to create a noticeable difference. Both actors were good in establishing an intelligent and emotional mogul. Natalie Martinez played the role of Madeline. She was a great supporting actress for Reynolds, but didn't do well standing on her own. Matthew Goode played the role of Professor Albright. He established a great villain to oppose Reynolds.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent movie that fumbled itself with a need to incorporate more action than story.

Terminator Genisys

If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my faebook page!

This film is the fifth installment to the film franchise. Sgt. Kyle Reese volunteers to travel back to 1984 to protect Sarah Conner. However, unexpected events create a fractured timeline.

This film was directed by Alan Taylor. This film attempts to re-create the old terminator formula while taking the most enjoyable parts of the first two films and combine them. However, returning to this classic formula feels outdated and confusing. Combing the two first films, and trying to tie it into the Terminator Salvation, oversaturated the film. As treads some familiar ground, and gives it a fresh spin, turns into a real drunken nostalgia trip. The time travel becomes highly unnecessary in its storytelling. It ruined what might've been an all right and understandable story. The film tries to amend its problems with tons of over the top action; which was okay to watch on screen. Originally they wanted to create to sequels based off this timeline and a spin-off television series. All that has been brought down to one potential sequel. Emilia Clarke played the role of Sarah Conner. She was decent in the role despite feeling like a child throughout the film. Jai Courtney played the role of Kyle Reese. Hid lackluster was great at supporting E. Clarke. Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role of the Guardian (Terminator). Surprisingly he is still acting in action films. His performance is about as a good as it ever was in the series Jason Clarke played the role of John Conner. They've chosen to completely change the ideal and personality of John Conner. It was an unexpected turn, but didn't need to be there.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It has some decent action, but its convoluted and outdated story ruins the film.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is based off Leo Tolstoy's novel, of the same title. Anna Karenina meets Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky and has an affair with him. She is forced to choose what is proper in society, to remain with her husband Count Alexei Alexandrovich, or follow her heart.

This film was directed by Joe Wright. This film operates under the assumption that audiences have read and understand all the various parts of the novel its based off, so there are a lot of small points that go unexplained. Now the styling choice is imaginative, and it keeps the film from becoming to slow paced. It was enjoyable, but somewhat unusual, to go from feeling like your watching a stage production to live action. The costume design is also lovely to look at. However, the styling choice takes away from explaining these complex characters choices and the lessons they learn. Keira Knightley played the role of Anna Karenina. She was great in her emotional role of a woman lost in love. Aaron Taylor-Johnson played the role of Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky. He was a great supporting actor for Knightly, and he also gave the film its lively romantic nature. Jude Law played the role of Count Alexei Alexandrovich. He was a great supporting actor for Knightly.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent romantic story that uses cinematography to its story.

This film is loosely based of the 1818 novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley. After Victor Frankenstein rescues Igor from the circus, he convinces Igor to assist him in creating a creature that will live beyond death.

This film was directed by Paul McGuigan. This film is meant to act as a re-imagining of the classic tale. However, this film only takes some liberties in changing the classic story, but keeps to the same familiar story. What keeps this film fresh is the take on the two popular characters. There are a few moments when the story gets strange, and some moments were it isn't logically explained. But, there is plenty of humor and emotion given to the two central characters. The computer animated homunculus was unique and unexpected. The animation used to create the creature was great and frightening to watch on screen. Even though the two main characters were enjoyable, there wasn't anything to create interesting secondary characters. Daniel Radcliffe played the role of Igor. His physical performance was great. His overall performance was very heart wrenching. James McAvoy played the role of Victor Frankenstein. He gave an eccentric character some emotion.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It has a lot of potential to be a great retelling, but it falls short of being highly creative.

This film can be seen in theaters.

This film is based off the book, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, written by Martin Sixsmith. Political journalist Martin Sixsmith reluctantly decides to write an article about Philomena's search for her long lost son. Philomena lost her child after being sent to live in a coven.

This film was directed by Stephen Frears. Okay, this film is not made for heavy Catholic followers. In many ways it does express a darkened viewpoint of the religion's history. There are also some secondary political matters mentioned. There were some historical alterations made to create a more dramatic story. Both characters are well established to express the creator's viewpoint and keep the film enjoyable. Although, the character of Sixsmith can be seen as cruel from time to time. However, the character of Philomena gives the film its warmth and compassion. As much as this story provides enriched hope it also provides some sadness. Steve Coogam played the role of Martin Sixsmith. Even though his character is dislikable, he gives the character the right amount of juice to be enjoyable. Judi Dench played the role of Philomena Lee. Her character is typical of the generation, but she is easily liked.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great emotional and inspirational story about family.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facbeook page!

This film is the final and fourth installment of the Hunger Game film franchise, and is based off the novel Mockingjay written by Suzanne Collins. Katniss Everdeen remains the face of the rebellion against President Snow. She decides that she will do anything to execute President Snow with her own hands.

This film was directed by Francis Lawrence. This film is faithful to the novel-even with its ending. This film follows directly behind the last installment in a great way; keeping the action and the tension flowing. The previous installment took a step back, and focused on the emotional parts of the story that inspire various characters to behave in a certain way. Part 2, carries out those characters actions. I know some people were upset that it was split into two parts, but it worked perfectly. This installment has more action and more violence than the previous films, because this is the final moments of the war. There may be a moment, or two, when younger, or squeamish, audiences might get scared.  The general story of this film makes a statement about war in general and the people who perpetuate it. The computer animation and the background were great to watch. For some unusual reason there are potentially make a prequel series; which is disappoint because it ended on the right note. I am curious, though, why they never kept the same cat throughout all the films. Jennifer Lawrence returned to the role of Katniss Everdeen. Even though her performance might be seen as dull, it worked for the film. Liam Hemsworth returned to the role of Gale Hawthorne. Despite being a great supporting actor for Lawrence, and spending more time on screen, he did not stand out amongst the cast. Josh Hutcherson returned to the role of Peeta Mellark. His performance was heartbreaking.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! A great ending to the Hunger Games franchise.

Dark Places (2015)

This film is based off the novel of the same title written by Gillian Flynn. Libby Day, a survivor of family murders, is convinced to take a second glance at the crime scene with assistance from a specialized club. While revisiting her past, she discovers that the wrong killer was arrested for the crime.

This film was directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner. I cannot tell how true this film was to the novel. However, the written story is unique and a decent mystery. The characters motivations, and histories, are very poorly explained; which leads to a poorly devised ending. I did enjoy how it told a past story, and present story. Even tough it felt that the audience was learning more than the central character. It was also unfortunate that in hte past story there was very little focus on young Libby Day. The use of a murder investigators club was cool, but they didn't feel necessary. There is some violence, but not a lot of gore. Charlize Theron played the role of Libby Day. She was good in her brooding character. Nicholas Hoult played the role of Lyle Wirth. He was a good supporting actor.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent mystery even if its poorly devised.

This film can be seen on DVD.

In 1982, messages are sent into space to contact alien species living in the universe. However, the message becomes misinterpreted as a threat of war, so they use classic video game characters to challenge Earth, and defeat it. However, Sam Brenner and his friends use their old gaming talents to aid Earth.

This film was directed by Chris Columbus. This film was made for classic video gamers, or current gamers looking for a glimpse into the past. However, the cheaply written story lacks any real enthusiasm for its subject matter. The performances do nothing to improve that. This film also has some chauvinism, and is very bro focused. With all that said, the animation was great to watch. The animation and the gaming aspects made the film somewhat enjoyable. Adam Sandler played the role of Sam Brenner. At this point in his career, he should've been able to at least provide some humor, or at least appear interested. Kevin James played the role of William Cooper. He was good at supporting Sandler. Michelle Monaghan played the role of Lieutenant Colonel Violet Van Patten. Despite being in a powerful position (even if its not the most powerful), there are several moments when she's shown as the typical man-hating woman. Peter Dinklage played the role of Eddie Plant. Even though his character has the most life, he portrays one of the worst character types in this films. Josh Gad played the role of Ludlow Lamonsoff. He was decent at supporting the supporting actors.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It is a great film for teaching younger generations about classic gaming, but not great entertainment for general audiences.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is based off the life of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013). Margaret speaks with her deceased husband, Denis Thatcher, while she tries to cope with her past and present.

This film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd. Yes, there are some historical inaccuracies used to provide a more dramatic flair. This film shows enough of her history for all audiences to understand without going into deep detail. It focus' more on Margaret confronting old age with the fierceness that she had in life. Unfortunately, the films focus also made her appear regretful and weak as opposed to how she was popularly known. It also shows a harsh side to her political views (mainly believing that the poor could achieve success without government assistance). It also takes time to show how she behaved in her day-to-day life. The make-up effects were great for making this film convincing. Meryl Streep prominently played the role of Margaret Thatcher. She was amazing in this performance. She gave a strange kindness to a woman who could be seen as stone-hearted. Jim Broadbent prominently played the role of Denis Thatcher. He was a great supporting actor.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! Even if it was poorly written, Streep's performance makes it worth a watch.

After chemical weapons have ruined the Earth's air supply, the government kept a group of talented humans alive within a well built sanctuary. They sleep as two men, Bauer and Cartwright, wake for a brief time of span protect these humans. While they are awake they have to fall asleep in a specialized chamber before the air runs out.

This film was written and directed by Christian Cantamessa. The predictable plot of the story remains fairly simple, but this relies heavily on its characters and their backstory. However, I think it would've done better had they switched a few things about the characters. It also would've helped if the story opened itself to more philosophical questions instead of trying to create more action. The backdrop used for this added the tension the film needed. The music and the backdrop images give this film an old science fiction feel. Fortunately, the performances of its leading actors rescues the film. Norman Reedus played the role of Bauer. His performance created the perfect character that you enjoy hating. Djimon Hounsou played the role of Cartwright. His emotional performance balanced Reedus'.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! There are some great qualities in this film; like its performances and its backdrop. However, the story hinders it.

This film is the 24th installment of the film franchise, and is based off Ian Fleming's character rendition. A cryptic message from the former M sends him on a mission to uncover a mysterious organization. Bond discovers the hidden truth of Spectre (the secret organization) and its deceit.

This film was directed by Sam Mendes. The opening credit sequences was as sexual as it was entertaining to watch. The music added to the opening. This film combines the modern variation of Bond with classic Bond. Which means that the film keeps classic Bond behavior and recent humanization. The story ties in with the other three films that Daniel Craig has starred in-even if it was a tad forced. This film also relies heavily on the 007 formula to tell its story. The infamous villain was perfect for the film, but certain parodies have ruined his image. The action is thrilling to watch on screen-even if it is unbelievable. Daniel Craig played the role of Bond... James Bond. It was difficult creating a balance between classic Bond and modern Bond. His performance didn't feel as strong as previous performances, but it worked for the film. Christoph Waltz played the role of Blofeld. He was a perfect villain, because he was insane but did not go to overboard. Lea Seydoux played the role of Madeleine Swann. She was a good Bond girl that worked great with Craig.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great Bond film, but it isn't the best to have been recently created.

This film can be seen in theaters.

After the tragic death of her father, Edith Cushing/Sharpe finds herself swept away to a terrifying mansion by her love of a strange man (Thomas Sharpe). The longer she spends at the mansion, the more she is reminded of the warnings of her past.

This film was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. This film was made for Toro fans and fans of classic gothic horror. The story, at its core, is a great suspenseful story that both shocks and terrifies. However, due to the characters behavioral choices and unclear motives the story falls apart. The needed romance required for this film, in all its forms, feels awkward and forced. This film also enjoys overstating its main plot points-even when its not necessary. There are moments when the film becomes unnerving and moderately scary. The ghost images are creepy and great animation to watch. This film's prominent treat is its gothic visual style. Visually the film gets most of its scares with symbolism and a house that feels like its alive. Mia Wasikowska played the role of Edith Cushing/Sharpe. Unfortunately, her performance remained as lifeless as her previous films. She was able to generate enough sympathy for the character. Tom Hiddleston played the role of Thomas Sharpe. His emotional performance gave the story its depth. Jessica Chastain played the role of Lucille Sharpe. Her performance was a great compliment to Hiddleston. However, on occasion it becomes a little overplayed.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! The visuals and creepy computer animated effects provide for an unnerving film. Despite the story being poorly devised.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

A documentary crew follows Leslie Vernon. Leslie Vernon is a man who aspires to become the next great slasher killer like Jason Voorhees, Freddie Krueger, and Michael Myers. The documentary crew finds themselves morally conflicted.

This film was directed by Scott Glosserman. This film was created to poke fun at the slasher genre while paying its homages. This film kind of starts like a found footage. It continues like that for a while, but as it stops as it approaches the ending. The opening was an awesome reference to old slasher films as are most of the cameo actors. The ending becomes and expected twist that kind of becomes a disappointment. There is plenty of dark humor that fans of genre can enjoy. There really isn't much gore, but there are some small thrills. Angela Goethals played the role of Taylor Gentry. Her heartfelt performance was typical of the heroine character. Sadly, she felt more like a supporting actress than a lead. Nathan Baesel played the role of Leslie Vernon/Mancuso. His dark humor and unexpected bursts of rage were great for this character. He made the film creepy and entertaining.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is an enjoyable film that pokes fun at the cliches of slasher films.

This film can be seen on DVD.

After the loss of her mother, Rose Halshford moves with her father to a strange home in a small town. Rose quickly learns that their new home contains dark and deadly secrets that could harm them. Rose struggles to reveal the truth of their new home.

This film was directed by Adam Massey. This film uses the main character's probable insanity to make the film more terrorizing. The dark story allows the character to be established amidst the terror, so that she is not just another victim. Due to its strange focus, the ending becomes very random and unexpected. This film focus' more on suspense, so there isn't a lot of gore or death. Miranda Cosgrove played the role of Rose Halshford. Her performance made the character believable and sympathetic. Donal Logue played the role of Jerry Halshford. He was a great supporting actor for Rose.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent film for suspense.

This film is based off the various book series, of the same title, written by R.L. Stine. Zach moves into a new town with his mother. After accidentally releasing monsters from R.L. Stine's books, he teams up with a friend, the author, and the author's daughter to rescue the town from these monsters.

This film was directed by Rob Letterman. The story of this film uses several monsters from various R.L. Stine novels. Since there are so many featured monsters the film moves frantically, and the humor is very over the top. However, the main monster that drives the film is the popular Slappy doll. The story is more kid friendly than some of the original novels. There was a great basis for the plot, but the choice to keep it child friendly hinders it greatly. There are a lot of homages to other horrors stories and authors. The monster effects were great on screen, and the backdrop added to its mild horror feel. Very young audiences might be afraid, but there really isn't anything terrifying about this film. Yes, there may be a sequel. Dylan Minnette played the role of Zach. His performance was very average for this type of ordinary character. Odeya Rush played the role of Hannah. She was good at supporting Minette and Black, but didn't pull the deep emotions needed for the character. Ryan Lee played the role of Champ. His character hurt the film. He was meant to be the comedic relief, but it ruined any tension that this film had. His character was also more annoying than likable. Jack Black played the roles of R.L. Stine/ Slapy/ Invisible Boy. As R.L. Stine his performance was too over the top to be believed. As Slappy he was a surprisingly good fit. Even if all the puns got tiring, he was a great villain for this film. I enjoyed how Slappy was shown as the authors darker half.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! Its a great horror film for children and fans of the book series, but there isn't anything for older audiences to enjoy.

This film can be seen in theaters.

800 years after his first death, Kaulder finds himself the last witch hunter who works for a religious organization. Kaulder finds his haunting past with the Witch Queen endangering the world again.

This film was directed by Breck Eisner. This film's story is heavily ingrained with fantasy, because the central character was inspired from a dungeon and dragons character created by Vin Diesel; so not all audiences are going to enjoy it. The film tells its story with past and present sequences. Both segments feel very different, but are enjoyable. Apart from that, the story is full of unexpected turns. However, the ending is where it falls apart; although it does leave it open for a sequel (which could be in the works). The computer animation visuals were great to watch on screen. It added a layer of magic to an ordinary world. Vin Diesel played the role of Kaulder. This is not the typical Diesel character that audiences are used to, and he pulled the performance off very well. His subtle emotions made the film. Rosie Leslie played the role of Chloe. She was a great supporting actress for Diesel. Elijah Wood played the role of Dolan 37th. His performance worked for the film, but there wasn't enough screen time to fully develop his character.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great fantasy film even with its faults.

This film can be seen in theaters.

Insidious: Chapter Three

This film is a prequel to the previous two Insidious films. while searching for her deceased mother, Quinn Brenner accidentally attracts a deadly spirit. Quinn and her family seeks the assistance of Elise Rainier to survive this encounter.

This film was directed by Leigh Whannell. This is a horror film that you will either love or hate; much like its predecessors. The story takes place before the Lambert family hauntings, but shows how Elise Rainier found her place among physics. Its works for its purpose, but fails to provide any true scares. The scariest parts were shown in the commercial. Some of the monsters were creepy, but nothing as terrifying as the other films. The spirit world remains true to its origins. It is also another sequel that doesn't have any real deaths. This film has a few jump scares and creepy imagery, but nothing very frightening. There might be another sequel. Stefanie Scott played the role of Quinn Brenner. She was good at creating a troubled innocent teenager, but did not have enough emotional appeal to stand out from the rest of the cast. Dermot Mulroney played the role of Sean Brenner. He was a great supporting actor for Scott. Lin Shaye returned to the role of Elise Rainier. Another great performance from Shaye, and stole the entire film from the other performers.

This film can be seen on DVD.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It is a suitable prequel, but its a horror movie that doesn't offer any true scares.

This film is based off a novel, with the same title, written by Andy Weir. Astronaut Mark Watney finds himself stranded on Mars after a fierce storm forces his crew to depart. Watney struggles to survive on Mars with what supplies were left behind on the planet, and to send a message to Earth.

This film was directed by Ridley Scott. I cannot compare it to the novel, but its science is moderately exaggerated to better fit the story; however, its science is one of the most accurate. It was great to know that NASA had a hand in helping create the film. The film's story gives a lot of heart to a survival and rescue adventure. There are some questions about his method of doing things, but the actor's performances can make you easily forget it. There is tons of humor to balance out the drama-even if it can sometimes overpower it. There is a lot of science used to explain what is happening, but it is understandable for all audiences. Sometimes the story jumps around to explain why something is happening, but all the little details are needed to make the story whole. The backdrops of Mars, space, and Earth worked together wonderfully to make the movie believable. The performances gave the film its warmth, but there were too many characters that weren't given enough time to be fully developed. Matt Damon played the role of Mark Watney. His performance made the film has emotional and tense as it was. He also provided most of the films humor. Jessica Chastain played the role of Melissa Lewis. She was a great supporting actress who gave the film additional heart. Jeff Daniels played the role of Theodore "Teddy" Sanders. He was another great supporting actor.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great science fiction that all audiences can enjoy.

This film can be seen in theaters.

A group of friends enter an online chat. They discover that they're being haunted by their past sins through a stranger using a deceased friend's account.

This film was directed by Levan Gabriadze (Leo Gabriadze). This film brings a new style of found footage filmmaking to America. Watching a horror film through online interaction is not new, but it does offer something different to the genre. It can become tiring, because everything is told through browser multitasking and reading computer text while listening to off screen chatter. The story is centered around revenge against "cyber" bulling, and the effects it has. I enjoyed the slow reveal of the character's past transgressions.  It was also intriguing that none of the characters are likable-even the villain. Which also kind of hinders it. The story is decent at building suspense. There are segments of horror, but nothing too gory. Unfortunately, the moments are too brief to be truly frightening. There are plans for a future sequel to come out next year. Since so much of this film's story is told through web browsing there is a very limited time for the actor's to perform on screen. Shelley Hennig played the role of Blaire Lily. From the few moments she was on screen, she was good at generating panic.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent horror/thriller film that offer some changes to the supernatural teen slasher films.

This film can be seen on DVD.

Insurgent (The Divergent Series: Insurgent)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the second book, same title, in the Divergent Trilogy written by Veronica Roth. It is also a sequel to the film Divergent. Tris (Beatrice) Prior is on the run from the Erudite and Dauntless factions after she is branded a traitor and a threat. However, she might be the tool for saving their corrupt society.

This film was directed by Robert Schwentke. I will be honest, much of this film hits the same marks that the first film did. The only difference is that the story is more involved, and offers an expansion on the established universe. There is also more emotional depth to this film, because the characters are dealing with the aftermath of their decisions. There are several moments, at least with one character in particular, where the story becomes convenience. Unfortunately, this film feels like a filler for a potential sequel until the end. The end manages to wrap things up nicely with an unexpected twist. Yes, there is a third part to be released. I did enjoy how the film introduced the rest of the world through its cinematography. The moments when she is trying to open the box are very visually unique. Many of the secondary characters did came off as one dimensional and unimportant. Shailene Woodley returns to her role as Tris (Beatrice) Prior. Her emotional performance gave this film its missing depth. Theo James returns to his role as Four. He was a great supporting actor for Woodley.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent sequel, but it doesn't do much to make itself stand alone as a great film.

This film can be seen on DVD.

Far From the Madding Crowd (2015)

This film is an adaptation of an 1874 novel, with the same title, written by Thomas Hardy. In Victorian England, head strong farmer Bathsheba Everdene attracts three very different suitors. Gabriel Oak (a sheep farmer), Francis Troy (a soldier), and William Boldwood (a prosperous bachelor). Bathsheba struggles to find her place in a male dominated society and to understand love.

This film was directed by Thomas Vinterberg. I can't compare this film to the novel, or its other film adaptations. Okay, this film is essentially made for fans of classic literature and old fashioned romantic women. The story takes it time in establishing the characters and the setting. However, it does kind of rush through a very dramatic ending. In the beginning much of the story felt like it needed to push the various characters onto their respective paths. In many ways, the telling of the film's story feels like classic cinema. This period piece is unique in that it features a strong willed female that operates her own farm. It also shows a men working under a woman's guidance. It also shows how lust can easily distract, or trick, someone. The music that is sung by the main character was great for the film. There isn't any violence or action, but it has some great cinematography.

Carey Mulligan played the role of Bathsheba Everdene. Her demure performance created an amazing portrait of a woman who is apart from society. It is difficult to turn your attention from her. Matthias Schoenaerts played the role of Gabriel Oak. He was a great supporting actor for Mulligan. His straightforward emotion, and the chemistry he shared with Mulligan, made the film. Tom Sturridge played the role of Sergeant Francis Troy. His deeply emotional performance worked great for giving the film its dramatic tension. Michael Sheen played the role of William Boldwood. There were a few moments that he felt out of place, but he managed to pull together a great performance.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! Even though its slow in telling its story, there is enough heart and romance for audiences to enjoy.

This film can be seen on DVD.

After the death of his wife, Rudi travels to Japan in order to make up for lost time and re-connect with her. While there, he meets a young impoverished dancer.

This film was directed by Doris Dorrie. This 2008 foreign film, tells a dramatic story that has some underlining tones about family values falling apart. The heart of the story is very touching even if there are a few moments when it becomes unconventional. Using the Butoh to aid in its story was very poetic. The backdrops also added to its poetic nature. However, there are a few moments when the film feels like its lingering a little too long. Elmar Wepper played the role of Rudi Angermeier. He was believable in the role even if he felt unlikable. Aya Irizuki played the role of Yu. She revealed the films heart and was a great supporting actress for Wepper.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a decent foreign film that uses creative means to show its heart.

The Expendables 3

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is the third installment of The Expendables franchise. Barney Ross changes the members of his team to take down an old foe: Conrad Stonebanks. After the new team is captured, Ross must use his old team to rescue them.

This film was directed by Patrick Hughes. This film is very stereotypical classic action film; in which, everything is centered around its action and nothing is done to create a decent plot or decent characters. Fortunately, most of the old characters have been established from previous films, but it is still meant to ride on the actor's success and not the characters. It is humorous that there is a shift in following the new cast of expendables, because this film is all about glorifying the older actors to remind audiences that they're still relevant. This film is saying that the old are going out, and the new are coming in. There are also a few moments that feel a little to random and forced. The humor used in this is film is very poor. However, the action itself was great to watch. The action really managed to balance out it massive cast. Before you ask, yes there will be another sequel. Sylvester Stallone played the role of Barney Ross. His performance was what you'd expect from a film meant to make him look great. The only thing that made him stand out from the rest of the cast was the amount of screen time he got. Mel Gibson played the role of Conrad Stonebanks. His villain character could've been better established, but it worked for the films simple plot.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! It has some good action, but nothing else.

This film can be seen on DVD.
