This Is the End

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the short film called 'Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse'. Comedic actors Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel find themselves trapped inside James Franco's house after attending a party. They are trapped with James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson in Hollywood, Las Angeles.  Together they must survive the end of times.

This film was written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. This film takes a group of actors and has them play exaggerated variations of themselves. It also includes several other popular celebrities living around Hollywood. This film is great for audiences who are fans of these comedians. Naturally, this film is full of drug usage and like any other film featuring McBride contains a lot on the subject of penis'. This film does have lazy story writing, and the plot is very simple minded. I will confess, that for me, once the characters were off the drugs the film got a lot better. This film succeeds due to its raunchy and dark humor. There are a lot of homages in this film which is great for frequent film goers. The violent effect are very cheesy, but the demon effects are great on screen. Yea, most of the demon creatures are anatomically correct. Interestingly enough, there are talks of a sequel. Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride all played the exaggerated variations of themselves. They were good at creating their roles comedically.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! This film's raunchy humor covers the film's dim script. Fans of these comedians will not be disappointed (obviously).

Mary Mason is an ordinary medical student trying to find a way to make money. Instead of stripping in a nightclub, she finds her skills as medical student paying off. She loses interest in the medical profession, and finds a career in extreme body modification and surgical torture.

This film was directed and written by Jen and Sylvia Soska (who also make an appearance in the film). First off, this is a highly bloody and gory film. So, obviously not meant for children or for the squeamish. Even though this story is gory it has a feminine touch not commonly seen in horror movies. Even with its feminine touch, it still follows a familiar gory story plot line. A woman gets angry for being attacked and gets revenge in the worst way. The acting was great for the film. The characters made the film believable. Katharine Isabelle played the role of Mary Mason. Her dryness in the film made her more frightening, and believable as a surgical murderer.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It takes a new look at the horror slasher genre. It is a great film for gory horror film goers.

Fifty years into the future, the Icarus II is sent into space in hopes of reigniting the earth's sun. After the mission goes off course to look into Icarus I, accidents begin to happen as the ship endures damage. The crew also begin dying off, and hope of a successful missions dims.

This film was directed by Danny Boyle. This science fiction film took inspiration from several films. Apart from scientific inaccuracies, the story is great. It is a great idea that plays off real fears of the sun dying out. This film does give several familiar sequences from former science fiction films. Midway through, it turns into a type of slasher flick. It is an odd change, but it gives the film some action. It is full of predictability and cliches.  There are several small gestures of humanity, but this script runs primarily off a logical physics perspective. So, at times it can seem a little cold and calculated. This film has great special effects and a great back drop. It also gives a new image to the spacesuit. Unfortunately, there isn't enough deep characterization to feel deeply for the characters. Cillian Murphy played the role of Robert Capa. He was great in his very logical role. His character begins as highly logical and almost cold. But, as the film progress', he reveals his emotions.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great film, even if it felt like things were added solely for excitement.

Child's Play (1988)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!

A new product toy has come onto the market-Good Guy Dolls. Young, Andy Barclay receives one for his birthday from his mother, Karen Barclay. Shortly after, strange murders begin happening around Andy. Detective Mike Norris suspects Andy as the culprit. However, Andy points out another culprit-his Good Guy Doll, Chucky.

This film was directed by Tom Holland. This film has become a cult classic among horror movie fans. It has inspired a film franchise and some comics. This film also garnered some controversy from people claiming that this film would incite violence among children. It was also was cited for having some involvement with two actual murder cases in the United Kingdom. This film's story begins as a "who done it" type of film. Has the film unfolds, it is discovered that the actual killer is the doll-Chucky, or Charles Lee Ray. This 1988 film, was widely seen as creative and imaginative. It took the image of slasher and placed it into a new setting. This film also created a blend of horror and comedy. The doll was modeled after the popular Cabbage Patch Kid dolls. His name was also created from three famous murderers; Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald, and James Earl Ray. This gave the character a very unique, and horrific, image. This film also had some great special effects and cinematography to present the image of the doll being alive. The great acting also made it all the more convincing. Alex Vincent played the role of Andy Barclay.  For his age, he was amazing in his role. He gave an authentic fear to the character that made Chucky frightful. Catherine Hicks played the role of Karen Barclay. She was great in creating the image of a desperate mother. Chris Sarandon played the role of Detective Mike Norris. He was great in his limited role. He provided a rational mind to the film. Brad Dourif acted, and voiced, the role of Chucky, or Charles Lee Ray. He was amazing in this role. His voice acting made the character truly terrifying, and his insane laughter made it all the more so.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a popular horror film that still frightens many audiences. It enjoys making fun of its own absurdity while keeping it violent.

Lords of Salem

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Heidi Hawthrone, is a troubled radio DJ who is sent a strange wooden box containing an album with the inscription a "gift from the lords".  After listening to the song, Heidi is haunted by images of the towns violent past and of Margaret Morgan. Playing the song on the radio brings to life the old curse cast by Morgan.

This is written, directed, and produced by Rob Zombie. Naturally, this being a Rob Zombie expect violence, creepy strangeness, nudity, rock music, dreadlocks, and (of course) Sheri Moon Zombie. Surprisingly, this film doesn't overuse swear words like previous Rob Zombie films. This film also has a very limited connection to Rob Zombie's 2006 song The Lords of Salem. The song also is not used in this film. Also, since Rob Zombie maintains all rights to this film's creation, this film is not made for mainstream audiences. This film has a simple story that ends very strangely and with little explanation. All the horrors in this film don't come from jump scares or unsettling storytelling, but through visual scares. Indeed, many of the images are creepy. Although a good general horror film, a lot of it feels like an elongated music video. Sheri Moon Zombie plays the role of Heidi Hawthrone. She was great in creating all the horror images needed for the film. However, more could have been done with her character to make her more compelling.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good horror film with plenty of horrific images, but the story is too lacking.

The Devil's Double

Caution: This Mght Contain Spoilers!

This film is an alleged biography based on the life of Latif Yahia. Latif In 1987, Yahia finds himself forced to become Uday Hussein's (Saddam Hussein's son) doppelganger. Latif see's the chilling reality of Hussein's sadistic son, and is forced to make life and death choices.

This film was directed by Lee Tamahori. There is no evidence to prove the accounts of this story as being accurate. There also isn't any evidence that Latif knew anyone from Hussein's regime. However, this film does offer a different image for a brutal dictator. The story constantly suggests the violence and sexual abuse that Uday creates, because he is unhappy. For all its violence, in some ways it treats the war as a kind of a joke-at least to the Hussein family. This film also offers a different image for Baghdad. Instead of only seeing the improvised living in stone dwellings, you see more city landscapes and more modern lifestyles. Dominic Cooper played the dual roles of Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia. He was great in creating two very opposite personalities and making them believable.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is worth the film to see Cooper's great acting. This film has all the violence and sexuality of a modern gangster film-which is unusual during wartime in Baghdad.

The Hours

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the novel, of the same title, written by Michael Cunningham. This film is about how three lives of woman are connected by the novel Mrs. Dalloway. In 1920's England, Virginia Woolf creates the story and is battling depression. In 1950's California, Laura Brown is a housewife with a son and an unhappy marriage. In 2001 New York, Clarissa Vaughan is preparing a party for her aid stricken friend and poet.

This film is directed by Stephen Daldry. This film is very dark, depressing, and contains a lot of lesbianism. Even though this film talks a good deal about suicide, it isn't morbid. This film handles death with a certain elegance. It explores, in depth, being a simple woman living with regret and uncertain about the grand mystery of life. The story is slow to be told, and does feel like a political agenda. There isn't much connection between the three women until the end. The script does often feel more like your reading a novel than watching a film. The music is also kept simple and uninspiring. The acting is great in this film. There isn't much characterization told through script, but more through actions. Meryl Streep plays the role of Clarissa Vaughan. She was truly great in this film. She made an uninteresting character likable. Julianne Moore played the role of Laura Brown. She was great in creating much of the drama in the film. Nicole Kidman played the role of Virginia Woolf. It is argued that the image this film present of the famous author is wrong, and many had a hard time avoiding her prosthetic nose. Apart from that, her performance was great in this film. She created a new image of depression.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It might be dark, but it is worth a watch. The acting is amazing on screen.

Jack Reacher

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the novel, One Shot, written by Lee Child. Jack Reacher is brought to Pittsburgh, because of a promise he made to a man named James Barr. If Barr were to commit another crime then he would be hunted. After Barr murders five people, Reacher begins an investigation, because the evidence is strange. With the help of Alex Rodin, Barr's attorney, Reacher discovers the hidden truth behind Barr's recent crime.

This film was directed by Christopher McQuarrie. This film has a predictable storyline, and follows the average story (including the perfect main character) for a crime thriller. For its genre, even if its not original, it is still a good story with plenty of action. The story is heartfelt and does prove very intriguing. This film is left very much open for a sequel, because there is a lot of untold back story. There are enough clues to lead audiences into the right direction. The action in this film is simple, but highly effective. There is also some impressive use of sniping. Tom Cruise played the role of Jack Reacher. He was good playing an all to familiar role. Rosamund Pike played the role of Alex Rodin. She was good at playing the familiar role of the potential love interest and damsel.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good action film even if it is predictable.
