This film is based off the novel with the same name written by Emma Donoghue. Jack and his mother, Joy, escape from the room that they were imprisoned in for seven (entirety of Jack's life). Jack's imagination aids him as he discovers a strange world outside of the room, and watches his mothers struggles.

This film was directed by Lenny Abrahamson. It is great knowing that the author of the novel also wrote the screenplay. The story of this film hits a very dark and emotional nerve that can be jarring. That being said, by telling the story from the perspective of the son it opens the film to imagination and keeps it from being intensely depressing. It also offers a new variation to a familiar story. It is was also great that this film focused on the characters instead of generating needless action or morbid horror. Jacob Tremblay played the role of Jack. His astounding performance drove the film to its emotional peak. Brie Larson played the role of Ma/Joy. Her emotional performance created the image of a broken and compassionate mother.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great dramatic film with amazing performances.

This film can be seen on DVD.

This film is based off the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind written by Mitch Cullin. The story is also loosely based off the character Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 93 year old Sherlock Holmes is retired and struggling with early dementia.Holmes gains the assistance of his housekeepers son to remember his last case and remember the woman who haunts his thoughts.

This film was directed by Bill Condon. Okay, this film strips away everything that audiences have become familiar with pertaining to Sherlock Holmes. There is very little action. Even though there are entertaining mysteries there isn't much for thrills or excitement. The story rebukes the classic novels by stating that they were exaggerations to make him more worthwhile. However, his character remains as distant and unapproachable as ever, but softens through his revelations. The story is a great dramatic story about old age. However, if the central character was not Mr. Holmes then it would be a great dramatic tale. Ian McKellen played the role of Sherlock Holmes. McKellen was great as a troubled Sherlock Holmes. His emotional performance made an unlikable character sorrowful. Milo Parker played the role of Roger. He was a great supporting actor for McKellen. He opened the character of Sherlock Holmes for the audience. Laura Linney played the role of Mr.s Munro. In various ways, she feels like a reminder of Mrs. Hudson.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It has superb acting and a great dramatic story. It just doesn't fell like a familiar Sherlock Holmes.

This film can be seen on DVD.
