Fifty years into the future, the Icarus II is sent into space in hopes of reigniting the earth's sun. After the mission goes off course to look into Icarus I, accidents begin to happen as the ship endures damage. The crew also begin dying off, and hope of a successful missions dims.
This film was directed by Danny Boyle. This science fiction film took inspiration from several films. Apart from scientific inaccuracies, the story is great. It is a great idea that plays off real fears of the sun dying out. This film does give several familiar sequences from former science fiction films. Midway through, it turns into a type of slasher flick. It is an odd change, but it gives the film some action. It is full of predictability and cliches. There are several small gestures of humanity, but this script runs primarily off a logical physics perspective. So, at times it can seem a little cold and calculated. This film has great special effects and a great back drop. It also gives a new image to the spacesuit. Unfortunately, there isn't enough deep characterization to feel deeply for the characters. Cillian Murphy played the role of Robert Capa. He was great in his very logical role. His character begins as highly logical and almost cold. But, as the film progress', he reveals his emotions.
I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great film, even if it felt like things were added solely for excitement.
