In New York, 1981, Abel Morales is an ambitious immigrant who struggles to protect and expand his oil business. His struggles become worse has his truck drivers continue to get attacked, and the government conducts an financial investigation.
This film was directed and written by J.C. Chandor, This film's story has a very slow build-up. It can be easy to lose focus. There is some tension, but a lot of it feels unimportant. This is a character driven story with much only being hinted (never really spoken about). Using the cities known violent year adds a great undertone to the story of a rising businessman. There is some violence in it, but there isn't much. This film isn't a high impact thriller like the title would suggest. Fortunately, the performances were great enough to keep this film from being too dull. Oscar Isaac played the role of Abel Morales. He was great at creating a collected character with emotions bubbling under the surface. Although, it was strange that this character never really reached a breaking point. Jessica Chastain played the role of Anna Morales. She was great at supporting Isaac.
I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a good film despite its slow pace.
This film can be seen on DVD.
