This film is based off Andres Muschietti's 2008 spanish short film. Annabel and Lucas are haunted by Lucas' past. His nieces, Victoria and Lily, are found having lived alone in a cabin for five years. Annabel and Lucas change their lives to adopt the two little girls. However, a dark secret has followed the girls into their new home.
This film was directed by Andres Muschietti, and was produced by Guillermo Del Toro. This film's story is much a fairy tale and ghost thriller cocktail. This film reminiscences Pan's Labyrinth to a degree. The story is very dark but also as heartwarming as it is saddening. In some ways it feels like much of the Mama character is an creature from the girls imaginations. There can be some confusion within the stories plot since most of it is explained out of order. It is moderately family friendly with its lack of gore giving it a PG-13 rating. This film takes from other horror and gothic films and mixes them together greatly leaving the visuals familiar to audiences. It has several moments of creepy thrills with moments of random humor. This film is a great winter horror film for 2013.
The cast worked great together. Jessica Chastain played the role of Annabel. She was great in her role. She made an unlikable character heartwarming for audiences. Megan Charpentier played the role of Victoria. She was great in her role. She was very convincing with her character's internal conflict. Isabelle Nelisse played the role of Lily. She was great in her limited role. She added an unexpected adorableness to the film. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played the roles of Lucas and Jeffrey. He was great in his dual roles. He gave the film some heart.
I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It's a great horror film that does more thrills than creates gore.

Que: How many times did actress Megan Charpentier play the younger version of actress Amanda Seyfried's film character?
