This film is a biography of the pin-up and bondage model Bettie Page and look into sexuality during the 1950's. This film presents the events that led her to become the pin-up and bondage model. It concludes with her religious self discovery. This film also uses the Kefauver Hearings, 1957, as a backstory.
This film was written and directed by Mary Harron. This film naturally is full of sexual images and is not a film for children. The film's story follows the biography of Bettie Page as she faced the discovery of sexuality in the 1950's and the societal fight against it. In truth, this story does not make a statement about feminine sexuality, or about bondage. It merely paints an image of the time and of the character. This film does present the confliction with her being heavy catholic, sexually abused, and a sex icon. It give's the film an truly realistic image of life, but it fails to provide any gripping drama. The cinematography being in black and white with moments of technicolor was a brilliant idea. It really did give the film an era. It keeps the film as innocent as its characters.

The cast was amazing in this film. Gretchen Mol played the leading role of Bettie Page. She was amazing in this role. She captured the strange innocence while keeping her unusual camera appeal. She also presents the unabashed nudity. Chris Bauer played the role of Irving Klaw. He was good in this role. He was the beginning of bondage porn. He managed to keep his character from being threatening or perverted. Lili Taylor played the role of Paula Klaw. She was good giving the film its heart. She worked with her husband in the same business. She made the world seem all the more innocent. Jared Harris played the role of John Willie. He was good in his limited role of being the photographer. He looked slimy, but didn't act like it. David Strathairn played the role of Estes Kefauver. He was good in his small role. He presented the opposing viewpoint.
I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! I really enjoyed this look into the the life of Bettie Page, and the look of sexuality in the 1950's.
