Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This is the fifth installment to the Paranormal Activity franchise, and also acts as a spin-off. Hector Estrella frequently visits his friend, Jesse Arista who lives in an apartment building in California. An unusual tenant lives just below them. After graduation, Jesse begins developing abilities. They start as friendly jokes, but soon turn deadly.

This film was directed by Christopher Landon. This film takes an overused franchise and tries to give it a 'fresh' start. Sadly, this film does not stand out enough to be a great fresh start. This film does pay plenty of homages to the previous films. This film does have some good general scares, but does not come close to the original. There is a major change of setting and of the people used for these types of films. There is a feeling that something is beyond what is seen is happening during this film. This change offers a new perspective that has not been seen before. It also presents a new image for religious beliefs. There is also more humor used than before, which makes the film more fun than scary. I did enjoy the use of the poor man's Ouija board. There are some creepy scares, but nothing that makes you jump out of your seat. It is strange that there are more special effects used for this film. It is odd that his film started without them, and increasingly uses them with each new film. There is also an overuse of the demon roaring than should have been. There also isn't that much gore in the film. Jorge Diaz played the role of Hector Estrella. He played a familiar role of a best friend. He showed the fear of this situation. Andrew Jacobs played the role of Jesse Arista. He actually brought a new image to someone becoming possessed. It might have been more comical, but it was effective.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good general supernatural horror film, but it fails to make its originality stand out.
