This film follows Selene is a vampire death dealer (a vampire that hunts lycans-werewolves) fighting in a 600 year old war between the two species. Selene see's a pack of lycans chasing after a human named Michael Corvin. She goes after him to try and find the reason. This leds her to uncovering the mysteries that have haunted both species for centuries, and secrets about her own past.

This film was written and directed by Len Wiseman. This film was a great start for this popular franchise. It wasn't just made for those who enjoy vampire and werewolf films. It has a gothic romantic story behind it that is propelled by its characters. The story was greatly developed. It had enough to explain the reason for their feud, and the main characters that started it (Viktor and Lucian). It also allowed for enough story to add to the characters. The ending of the story did feel like they were throwing nothing but twists in there. That might be because I just watched the special extended edition. Also, if watching the films back to back, then there isn't a wholly smooth flow between all of the films. The main points remain the same which is great. This film has amazing gothic stylings to it. The gothic world compliments the gothic attire perfectly. The special effects were well done. In the ending battle it did get slightly over the top, and felt more like watching a kung-fu movie. It was great to see they eyes constantly changing based on the various characters moods. The vampire and werewolf special effects were well done, and not overplayed. The effects for Michael's transformation was grotesque. It was great to know that most of it was mainly done with make-up and prosthetics. Although, with the actor it looked really bizarre.

The cast worked great together. They each created different aspects to this war. Kate Beckinsale played the role of Selene. She was great at playing the fighter vampire. She gave the impression of age and agression which was perfect for her character. Scott Speedman played the role of Michael Corvin. He was good at playing Beckinsale's opposite. He gave the film its heart. Shane Brolly played the role of Kraven. He was great at playing the slimy character that everyone could easily hate. Michael Sheen played the role of Lucian. He was great playing the enraged werewolf. He showed the opposing side with some refinement. Bill Nighy played the role of Viktor. He was great playing the leader of the vampire coven. He made his character a bad-ass while keeping some class. Sophia Myles played the role of Erika. She was good in her small role.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great gothic film. It gives a full in-depth story, and has some good special effects.
