This film is based off Marvel/Malibu comics, of the same title, written by Lowell Cunningham. This film follows James Edwards, a police for N.Y.P.D., who discovers that aliens exist on this planet while on a chase. He meets Agent Kay from MiB, and is decides to join MiB to fight against alien scum. A bug arrives on Earth to take the Galaxy from the Arquillian prince. This places Earth in the middle of a possible intergalactic war.
This film was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and was the first in the film trilogy. This film received great appraise which is unusual for a comedic science fiction film. This film had great visual affects for a 1997 film. It used puppetry, computer animation, and make-up effects. The culmination gave the film an awesome realistic feel, because it found the perfect balance. The culmination has allowed the film to last through the change of time, or at least keep from looking like crap. The script also provided for a famous film quote. The simplistic story was great for this type of film. It created a believable world. The comedy came from the character reactions to the situations around them. The story also allowed for great character development. One of things that I enjoyed was how much of the story was hinted at in the beginning of the film.
The cast was great together. Will Smith played the role of James Edwards/Agent J. He was the comic relief in this film. At times he did get slightly over the top, but he was good to watch in this film. Tommy Lee Jones played the role of Agent K. He was great playing the opposite of Will Smith. He played the stoic experienced partner. Linda Florentino played the role of Laurel. She was good in her small role. Vincent D'Onofrio played the role of Edgar/the bug. He was great at creating the disgusting villain that everyone could hate. RIP Torn played the role of Zed. He was good playing the boss of MiB, and providing an unexpected comedic humour to the film.
I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It still remains a great film for modern audiences to enjoy. This film also began the MiB franchise.
