Jersey Boys

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you might like my page!

This film is based off the musical with the same title. It is also loosely based off the life story of Frankie Valli The Four Seasons band. Four Young Men (Frankie Vallie, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi, and Tommy DeVito) from New Jersey decide to form a rock band in the 1960's. With a new talented song writer, they become the iconic band of the era.

This film was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood. Interestingly, Eastwood does not star, or make an appearance, in this film. I can not say how truthful any of this story is about the actual events that happened within the band. But, I can say that what works on stage does not always work for theaters. It remains the familiar story of disgruntled youth stumbling onto fame and then massive trouble. The stage play is a musical, but the film is not. There are some small musical moments that give the film some harmony, but it is very fleeting. The story is told through a narrator, and the different perspective's that each band member has. This makes for a very convoluted story that has no end game. Each character has different concerns, and with each perspective change the story itself changes. Since it is told from various perspectives, each character offers different information. A lot of this information is unnecessary, but cool to know. The use of gangsters is unique, but highly unnecessary. They are a mere tool to easily progress the story. There are no pertinent secondary characters. The few that should matter are not given enough time on screen to be of any importance.  Which is unfortunate since the main characters aren't given the opportunity to shine as they needed to. This film is also meant to take place in the 1960's, but so much of it feels like the 1950's. There is a show of time progression, but it still feels trapped in a 1950's era. This is the first time these actors have been brought to a massive large screen audience. John Lloyd Young played the role of Frankie Valli. He looked great on screen. There were a lot of moments where his very emotional acting was over shadowed by limited screen time. Vincent Piazza played the role of Tommy DeVito. This character was established as the bad boy villain. But when there could've been a resolution, or a fight, his character just disappears. Erich Bergen played the role of Bob Gaudio. He was good on screen as a supporting actor to Young. Michael Lomenda played the role of Nick Massi. Unfortunately, he was a very unmemorable actor and character.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It has a great basis for musical life story, but it's narrative choice makes it a very convoluted story.

This film can be found on Netflix DVD.

Big Hero 6

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based of a Marvel comic of the same name. After he suffers the loss of his brother (Tadashi), robotics prodigy Hiro Hamadar discovers the that a masked man is responsible for his death. With the assistance of his newly found college friends, and his brother's medical project (Baymax) Hiro creates a superhero team that will defeat the masked villain.

This film was directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. This film bridges the gap for little children and superhero film. Disney has taken advantage of its newly acquired rights to create their second animated superhero's film. It showcases a lot of advances in technology that make-up their super hero abilities. The story of Baymax and the teen hero is very predictable and a familiar origin story that is enjoyable to watch. It is full of well paced unexpected heart, humor, and action. It'll keep the adults invested and the kids entertained. This film is also a good representation of handling loss. The action keeps the film from becoming too dull, and is enjoyable to watch. The character's on screen emotions drive this film, and they are each enjoyable to watch. Ryan Potter voiced that character Hiro. He was great playing the troubled and intelligent youth. He really drove the film into what it needed to be. Scott Adsit voiced the character of Baymax. He was adorable and hilarious to watch on screen. He made the film unique and fully likable.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is the newest Disney classic that all families can enjoy.

The animated short, Feast, that appears before the film begins is an treat to watch. It is made for dog lovers everywhere who know the pain of food sharing. Through the food, and dog's eyes, it tells a surprising love story.

I give this short 5 out of 5 stars!

This film, and short, can be found in theaters.

Mansfield Park (1999)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is loosely based of a novel, of the same title, written by Jane Austen. Fanny Price is sent to live with her wealthy relatives, the Bertram's, at the age of ten. She is raised as an outcast to the society the family is accustomed, but taught how to function within it. Years later, Price is caught between her hopeless love and the expectancy of a proper marriage. During this delicate time the family is also facing their hidden turmoils.

This film was directed by Patricia Rozema. This film differ's from the book that everyone is familiar with. Some new ideas have been added (like slavery) and some aspect's of Austen's life has been incorporated into the main character. I'm sure there are other changes so die hard fans of the novel will hate it. This film really is an intelligent pun on women in society (during the 1880's), and the effects of rising in society. The hopeless romanticism will be too much for male audiences, but it's sharp wit will make up for it. Although this film really does make a statement about women and their hopeless hearts. The use of certain concepts makes you question the characters, and not always in a good way. Adding in Price's storytelling moments was a nice touch, but it was unnecessary. It does offer some insight into this timid character though. Frances O'Connor played the role of Fanny Price. She was great in the role of this timidly outspoken character. The film itself does aid in showing the battling emotions of this character. Johnny Lee Miller played the role of Edmund Bertram. He was great in his supporting role.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It might not be suitable for all audiences, but it has a great romantic story.

Look for this film in your Netflix instant que list.

Earth to Echo

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

A highway construction team is tearing up Mulberry Woods in Las Vegas. Tuck, Munch, and Alex are a trio of friends who decide to spend their last day together finding the location that their malfunctioning phones have been indicating. At that location in the desert, they discover an alien life form, and decide to help it escape Earth.

This film was directed by Dave Green. This film could've been a lot better had Disney not sold the film rights. Anyway, this film is told through it's narration from the perspective of a teenage boy. The film is presented like someone is editing lots of handheld footage. There are some parts shown from Echo's perspective (the alien) without any explanation of how this footage was obtained. Having the story told like this makes it uninteresting and annoying to watch. As adorable as watching the tiny robotic alien is, most adult audiences would not enjoy this film. The story is also very unabashedly reminiscent to the classic E.T. The computer animation was done extremely well, and made the film feel authentic. The robot effects were impressive. The characters were good, but not well thought out. They are also the very familiar kid dynamic. Teo Halm played the role of Alex. He was the typical popular kid full of heart, but did not do much to stand out. Astro (Brian 'Astro' Bradley) played the role of Tuck. This is the narrator who is treated as a sidekick for the film's story. He is even given a sidekick name. He might not have been the best choice for the narrator, but he was decent in the role. Reese Hartwig played the role of Munch. He was the typical nerd who fell in with the popular kids. Ella Wahlestedt played the role of Emma. She would've been a good, or decent, character if the film had not been narrated by a teenage boy.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! This film has great graphics and an adorable little robot, but nothing else makes this film worth the watch.

Manhunter (1986) and Red Dragon (2002): A Comparison Review

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

"Do you dream much, Will?"

Okay, this is my first time writing a comparison review on the original and the remake. I figure, I'll review them separately at first and then finish with the comparison. These films are both based off Thomas Harris' novel entitled Red Dragon. Will Graham is pulled into another dangerous FBI manhunt by Jack Crawford. Despite the risk of losing his family, Graham agrees to help. Feeling desperate, Graham is forced to seek the assistance of Doctor Hannibal Lecter/Lecktor.

In 1986, we were introduced to the characters of Will Graham, Hannibal Lector, and Francis Dollarhyde (the Red Dragon). This film (directed by Michael Mann) mainly follows Will Graham, the protagonist, through this manhunt mystery. However, unlike later films, this story doesn't offer much opportunity to properly know the infamous killers-Lecktor and Dollarhyde. There only role appears when it is convenient for the plot. Lecktor, in the short time that he shown on screen, is intellectually disturbing and cunning. However, he is not highly memorable on screen. Dollarhyde is presented as disturbingly insane. Which makes it curious as to how a woman could become attracted to him. The film hints at the horrors without fully revealing them. For instance, it isn't fully revealed that Lecktor is a cannibal. It also only hints at the crime done to the two families. There is some blood though. The story is designed to make the Graham into the ultimate good hero fighting against evil. The few special effects are very cheesy, and the cinematography is typical 1980's crime style. However, this film's use of crime scene analysis and the sensitive portrayal of an FBI investigator became an inspiration for several later investigative projects.

In 1991, we were reintroduced to Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs. We were also introduced to a new hero, Clarice Starling. In 2002, a remake (directed by Brett Ratner) of the 1986 Manhunt was created due to the huge popularity of the 1991 film. By this film, the public had been fully made aware of Lecter's crimes. This film starts by reminding us of his wicked ways. There is a lot more violence in this film, because it shows more of the villains. It makes Dollarhyde into a more sympathetic and unsettling villain. Lecter continues to enthrall and frighten a captive audience with his terrifying ability to manipulate people. This film was made to skillfully offer more of the favorite villain-Lecter. However, Graham takes on a slightly darker aspect while still remaining as the ultimate good. This film's cinematography is more typical of the 2000's horror style with much better special effects. Unfortunately, since this film was the second sequel to Silence of the Lambs, the film style became very formulaic and repetitive.

There are some small deviations between the two films; such as the prison cell appearance and the ending sequence. Apart from that both films tell the exact same story with a few alterations. Even some of the lines are repeated. These two films really do present the change in times. The hero becomes darker, and continues to do show in the television show Hannibal. The images become much more violent. The villain becomes the center of devote attention. Manhunter was a great basis, but Red Dragon was the full realization of the image.

William Peterson played the role of Will Graham. He was one of the most sincere actors I'd seen in a while on screen. Even if he did appear to have bleached hair and skin. Edward Norton reprised the role of Will Graham. He was sincere, but he managed to bring a slightly darker aspect to the surface. However he was less memorable. So, I would say that William Peterson was better in the role. Brian Cox played the role of Hannibal Lecktor. For the short time he was on screen, he was good. He had the intellectual creep vibe, but was easily forgetful. Anthony Hopkins reprised the role of Hannibal Lecter. As natural, he was amazing in this role. He got to spend more time on screen, but he was always memorable. I'd say Anthony Hopkins was much better in this role. Tom Noonan played the role of Francis Dollarhyde. He was great in creating a frightening killer. Ralph Fiennes reprised the role of Francis Dollarhyde. He created a frightening character that was highly sympathetic. It was much easier to understand the logic behind this killer. Ralph Fiennes was much better in this role.

I give Manhunter 3 out of 5 stars! It is a great introduction of this world and its characters.
I give Red Dragon 4 out of 5 stars! It was a great recreation, even if it felt too familiar.
I will say that Red Dragon was the final product that came out so much better than the original.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is inspired from the writings of Stefan Zweig. In this story being told by an unknown author to a deceased one, an author discovers a strange man, Mr. Zero Moustafa, in a dying hotel, The Grand Budapest Hotel. This young writer speaks with Mr. Zero Moustafa about the hotel's first devoted concierge, Monsieur Gustave H., in Zubrowka.

This film was directed by Wes Anderson. This film continues the storytelling that director Anderson is famous for; such as Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Which means that this is told like a visually written novel, complete with chapters and a narrator. The beginning of the film is very much the introduction where you learn about the characters and their environment. After the very detailed introduction, comes the campy over the top and whimsical comedy. This film is mostly a whodunit mystery without the mystery. It also presents a lot of historical societal horrors in the form of comedic pros. There are a lot of deep emotional ideals that are hidden underneath its comedy (like greed and fascism). The script lines are written mainly in poetry, or as a repeated form to remind audiences of what is important. The film does have a unique cinematography that harkens to old school style of filmmaking. There is also a unique styling for the backdrop and character design. Ralph Fiennes played the role of Monsieur Gustave H. He was great with his comedic timing. Anything his character did was always directly on cue for comedic timing. Tony Revolori played the role of young Mr. Zero Moustafa. He was a great supporting actor for Fiennes. His almost silent agreeable character hide a lot of emotional backstory that was only ever hinted at. F. Murray Abraham played the role of Mr. Zero Moustafa. He was good as a narrator for the film.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! This is a unique style that some audiences will enjoy while others won't.

The Frozen Ground

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based on the hunt for the 1980's serial killer Robert Hansen. Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe is pulled into a strange murder case. The case unravels to reveal that a serial killer is hunting in Alaska. Halcombe seeks the assistance of a victim, Cindy Paulson, that escaped from the killer's clutches.

This film was directed by Scott Walker. This film is done with respect to the unknown number of victims. The plot is very predictable, but it tries to remain true to actual events. So much of the film feels formulaic to this type of genre (true crime). However, the performances keep the film from falling flat. More could have been done to make the characters not only more relatable, but more impactful. There is enough shown to present the killer as dangerous and misunderstood. Interestingly, this film only hints at sexuality. There isn't a lot of gore, but some blood. Nicholas Cage played the role of Jack Halcombe. It is great seeing Cage returning to a film role. He was good in the role, but he didn't pull off the intense emotion that was needed for this character. John Cusack played the role of Robert Hansen. He was great as the creepy killer. It is unfortunate that he did not spend more time on screen. Vanessa Hudgens played the role of Cindy Paulson. She was great in her damaged role.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good true crime film. But, it could've done better with more intensity behind its story.

The Hundred-Foot Journey and The Fluffy Movie

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the novel, with the same name, written by Richard C. Morais. After the loss of his mother, Hassan Kadam and his family move around Europe trying to find the perfect location for a new restaurant. They finally settle in Saint-Anton-Noble-Val, France. There they open a restaurant across the street from Madame Mallory's Michelin star restaurant. Through food Hassan Kadam breaks cultural barriers and finds a new beginning for himself and his family.

This film was directed by Lasse Hallstrom. The story of this film trends very familiar territory, and keeps itself highly predictable. What makes it different is that it shows the clash between different ethnic groups. It also shows how very different their food styles are, and how these foods can blend together to create something new. Everything in the film is done to exemplify the differences between to two cultures. There are several dark moments in the film that reveal the misunderstandings of life. In many ways this film feels like a cooking fairytale. Manish Dayal played the role of Hassan Kadam. His emotions drove the film's plot and gave the film its heartfelt presence. Helen Mirren played the role of Madame Mallory. As natural, she was a treat to watch on screen. She gave the film its bold and salty edge. Om Puri played the role of Papa. He was great in providing the film its mysticism.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great heartfelt dramedy that audiences can enjoy. It just feels too familiar.

Okay, I'm technically not supposed to review this type of film. This is a stand-up comedy film that was shown on the big screen. Much like the recent bash of concert films that have been created. Anyway, this film is full of Fluffy's great humor and is just as full of his stories. There are some moments that unexpectedly hit emotionally hard. All in all, this is a great film that I enjoyed. I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

Carl Casper loses his job during a public dispute with a food critic. Carl, unable to find another cooking job, decides to open a food truck with the assistance of his ex-wife. Opening this food truck allows him to reunite with his family and rediscover his love of cooking.

This film was directed and written by Jon Favreau. This film was definitely made for food enthusiasts. The food featured in the film is just as important as the story itself. So, prepare to watch yummy food and get hungry. Fortunately most of the food and cooking shown is believable. The plot itself is predictable, but it is also very humorous and sincere. There is a lot of believability to the story even if it is slightly over the top. The film's plot starts very rich, but it slowly drifts away. It would have been great to see more of the father son bonding experience. There is a lot of adult language and some adult humor. So, even though this could be a family film it might not be suitable to all families. This film is unique in that it has a lot of big name actors in secondary character roles. These actors do get to make a presence on screen, but they do not fully outshine the leading character. Jon Favreau played the role of Carl Casper. He was great at doing everything for this film. He managed to create a serious chef with heart and humor. Emjay Anthony played the role of Percy. He was great supporting Favreau. Their on screen chemistry made the film worth the watch. John Leguizamo played the role of Martin. He gave the film its comedy in great ways.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great film for food lovers and families.

Lizzie Borden Took An Axe

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is a biopic based on Lizzie Borden. In 1892 Fall River, Massachusetts, young Lizzie Borden was tried for the brutal murder of her father and step mother.

This film was directed by Nick Gomez. This made for television film was created for the Lifetime network. Like most other networks, they are looking for modern dark stories to reach new audiences. Apparently, this film was so popular that it spurned Lifetime to recreate it as a short series. This film places more of its focus around the murders and around the court case; which is cool to watch. The story implies heavily that she is guilty, but it does offer some room for doubt. I can not tell how accurate the film is to actual history. There is some blood and nudity in this film. The cinematography does offer a subtle unnerving feeling. The only thing that stands out is that this film takes place in the late 1880's, and they play rock music. It is fitting, but it ruins the atmosphere of the film. Christina Ricci played the role of Lizzie Borden. She was great in the role of Lizzie Borden. She was able to not only make this character sympathetic, but also unsettling. Clea DuVall played the role of Emma Borden. She was great supporting Ricci.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a good dark film without being over the top gory.

Child of God

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based of the novel, with the same title, written by Cormac McCarthy. In 1960's Sevier County, Tennessee, Lester Ballard lives outside of modern society. Lester's feeble mind turns to crime and degradation as he starts descending into a cave dweller.

This film was directed by James Franco. This little off the beaten path film is based off a popular dark author's work. The story focuses around some very dark subject matter that gets darker as the story progresses. The very hick story shows what happens to an insane man who, instead of receiving the help he needed, is banished from society. It is good to have a story that shows how ignorance about mental illness can destroy a society. There is a lot of adult material in this story such as necrophilia; so not for children. The ending was rather surprising-showing that there is never a true happy, or sad, end. The film is told like you are reading the story; which kind of throws off the pace but it works. The main song used was good, because it gave the film its full feeling. Director James Franco does make a small appearance in the film, but nothing over the top. Scott Haze played the role of Lester Ballard. He was amazing in this very dark role. Strangely, there was way too much snot coming out this man's nose! Tim Blake Nelson played the role of Sheriff Fate. For his limited time on screen, he was great at supporting Haze. His role didn't stand out much, but it suited the film.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It has a good basis, but it feels like it could've been more. As I said before, this isn't a film for all audiences.

Silver Linings Playbook

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film was adapted from the novel The Silver Linings Playbook written by Matthew Quick. Pat is taken from a mental hospital and forced to fix his life. As he struggles to fix his broken marriage, he meets Tiffany (a girl with her own mental problems). Pat begins to discover how to find his life's silver lining.

This film was directed by David O. Russell. The plot of this film seems to be a joke on the modern concept of marriage. It is also frequently pokes fun of humanity itself. It also shows that everyone, even the insane, can find happiness. The story is full of dark comedy and romantic hope. It is a new way to tell a love story without being too familiar or too cliched. Since the story is not only about two insane people, but also situated in Pennsylvania, nearly every line is shouted. This film has an amazing supporting cast; fortunately the supporting cast did not outshine the leading cast. Bradley Cooper played the role of Pat. He managed to present his character's illness in a likable and sympathetic way. Jennifer Lawrence played the role of Tiffany. She was a great supporting actor for Cooper. She created a unique character that audiences could feel for.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great dark romantic film that couples can enjoy.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This is based off the novel The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and is the third sequel of the film series. Katniss Everdeen has been taken to the remains of District thirteen with fellow victor Beetee and Finnick Odair. Peeta Mellark is still held captive by the Capitol. The other districts have begun protesting the Capitol in any method that is possible, but are loosing faith. President Alma Coin convinces Katniss to become a propaganda for the rebellion. Through this, Katniss begins to witness the damage this rebellion has caused. Katniss also struggles to rescue Peeta from the Capitol.

This film was directed by Francis Lawrence. Fortunately, this film remains as true to the novels as it possibly can. Like most modern popular novel recreations, the finale has been split into two parts. A lot of recent films have done this by forcing more unnecessary material into a completed story. However, this film takes what the other films have been unable to show and use it as its filler material-which works amazingly for this film. Since this film is part 1 of 2, it does feel like it's missing an ending; which audience's will have to wait another year for. This story has taken a much emotionally darker turn than its predecessors. There isn't a lot of gore, but there is morbidity. It's the prequel to the rebellion war, so there is naturally a lot of suggested violence. Surprisingly, it still received a PG-13 rating. The story offers the perfect political and emotional build-up to the upcoming part 2 film. There is some action, but not a ton of it. This film focuses more on the character emotions and the politics that led to this rebellion. It also takes its time showing how this war is affecting the people, and how either side has lost their ethics. Jennifer Lawrence returned to the role of Katniss Everdeen. She has really grown into this role. She was able to fully offer this character the extreme emotional loss that it deserved. Liam Hemsworth Returned to the role of Gale Hawthorne. For the first time in this series, he had more than a brief appearance. He was a great supporting actor for Lawrence. Julianne Moore played the role of President Alma Coin. She was capable of giving a very dry character an unsetting appearance. Philip Seymour Hoffman returned to the role of Plutarch Heavensbee. He was able to continue his role in this film-it is not entirely certain how much he will appear in part 2. Either way, it was nice to watch him for a final time.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great build-up for the next film. It also offers audiences a chance to better understand these familiar character.

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Juliette Grant, a magazine editor, travels to Cairo in hopes of visiting her husband (who works for the U.N.). However, her husbands sends Tareq Khalifa to watch over her because he is unable to meet her. During her stay, Juliette begins falling in love with Tareq and starts questioning her relationship with her husband.

This film was directed by Ruba Nadda. So much of this film is told through subtle gestures and with maturity. It pays a great respect to the environment that it is based in. It also show small hints of the troubles that people living in Cairo are facing without taking away from the heart of the film's story-the romance. It also spends a lot of time making the audience ask the question: what if? With this question, the ending comes as a surprise twist. The parts the of Cairo that the film shows are very beautiful on screen. Patricia Clarkson played the role of Juliette Grant. Her poise on screen stood out like a jewel in the desert landscape. It was hard to feel for this character-even in its smallest form. Alexander Sidding played the role of Tareq Khalifa. He was great working alongside Clarkson.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a great romance film for a mature audience.

On the eve of huge construction project, Ivan Locke decides to try and repair the damage he caused. In doing so, he is forced to listen as his life crumbles around him.

This film was directed by Steven Knight. This film tells the familiar story of a man's single night affair being revealed and how it affects his life. However, the story is told entirely through telephone calls as he is traveling down a highway. In its form of telling, the familiar story is freshly told. It does work better for the small screen, and a small audience. The cinematography was great for keeping the film interesting. The entire film is shown from his vehicle, so there aren't any special effects or other actors. Tom Hardy played the role of Ivan Locke. Since he was the only performer through this entire film, it depended heavily on his performance. Fortunately, he was able to give the film its purpose and his emotional performance was entertaining to watch.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good film that tells a familiar dramatic story through a new method.

Nebraska

Caution:This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

David Grant decides to take his father Woody Grant from Billings, Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska to claim a reward that Woody believes is real. Along the way, David learns more about his Woody's past and about his family.

This film was directed by Alexander Payne. First off, the entire film is shown in black and white. It works artistically for the film, but some audiences may have trouble with it. This choice and with the way the story is told makes the film feel like a reminder of old classic films. However, that means that this film was not made for the general audience. It was made for critics, awards, and for art. The acting is good for the film, but it is very bland. The story itself is also told in a very bland manner. After the first few minutes of the film, the story does pick up in a terrific way. The story is a representation of an average modern family facing some of their greatest tribulations. It is also a representation of longing for a past, but accepting the current. That being said, this film does film like your watching an excerpt from a real family. Surprisingly, this film has an R rating that was too harsh. The film does have a lot of crude language, but nothing you wouldn't find outside of a normal dysfunctional family function. There isn't any sexuality in it, nor is there a ton of violence. Will Forte played the role of David Grant. His character does not have much appeal, and his acting does not make the character stand out as much as it should. However, he really pulls it together during the ending sequences. Bruce Dern played the role of Woody Grant. He was the main driving force that gave the film its purpose and sentiment. He is a man of little words, but a lot of emotion.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is an enjoyable film for a select audience. The film begins very blandly, but it improves.

An American Crime

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based on the true story of the murder and torture of Sylvia Likens in Indianapolis, in 1965. Sylvia and Jennie Likens stay with Gertrude Baniszewski and her family while their parents travel with the circus. After a while, Gertrude begins tormenting Sylvia Likens. Within weeks, the neighborhood children become involved with this horrific crime.

This film was directed by Tommy O'Haver. This film was one two films that focused on this crime; only this film premiered on television. Unlike The Girl Next Door, this film turns everyone into a villain without a hero. This film also uses the actual people involved to recreate actual events, instead of creating a fully fictionalized version of this story. The films does respectfully tell a lot of truth about the incident, but there have been some alterations. The film is a statement about unknown human cruelty and people's refusal to speak against it. It is difficult to fully know who the narrator is. It mainly appears to come from Sylvia, but it also speaks from the people in the court hearing. Fortunately, the two narratives work together to create a great psychological story. A lot of this film's horror doesn't come from the gruesome torture. Instead, it comes from the human character's psychology. Ellen Page played the role of Sylvia Likens. A familiar actress to these types of dark films, she was finally able to put more emotion into her role. Catherine Keener played the role of Gertrude Baniszewski. She was amazing in her role. There was so much subtlety and complexity to this character that it made the film stand out.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It is a great psychological horror film even with its low budget.

The Fault in Our Stars

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based of the novel, of the same title, written by John Green. Hazel Grace Lancaster had a terminal thyroid cancer that spread into her lungs. During her recovery, her mother insists on sending her to a group therapy meeting to cure her depression. In one of these meetings, Hazel meets Gus. Through Gus' unusual behavior, Grace falls in love and discovers a new meaning for life.

This film was directed by Josh Boone. This new teenage sensation, is a very dark and depressing film. It is depressing because, unlike other teenage films, this story tries to keep a realistic focus. It's realistic focus being that life often disappoints. Despite what Christian reviewers are claiming, this film is not meant have religious symbolism. If anything, religion is only viewed as a cooping mechanism. One of the many methods to finding some meaning in a dying life. Which is what each of these characters struggles to discover. Even though the central character is highly saddening, the secondary characters keep the film an entirely bleak experience. The wit mixed into the heart also assists in keeping it from being to overwhelmingly bleak. The foreshadowing and awkward moments made it feel like a teenage flick. It gave it the feeling that modern teenage films must follow. There is a ton of focus on the characters, but not as much on the cancer. The film feels like it made the cancer more into a plot device than being about surviving the disease. The characters do often talk poetically, but they do not talk Shakespearian. I did find it comical that these teenagers were pretty much given the freedom to do anything they wanted at any time. The novel and its author mention in the story, are meant to be a plot device; therefore it does not exist. I know this upset a lot of people, but it is still fitting. It cinematography gave the film is true feeling of understated happiness. Shailene Woodley played the role of Hazel Grace Lancaster. Her depressing performance was great for this film. She presented the dark reality without sugar coating anything. Ansel Elgort played the role of Gus. He offers the film its driving heart. His character offers others the chance to remain positive, no matter how dark the situation is. Nat Wolff played the role of Isaac. He gave the film much of its dark humor.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars! It is a great teenager survival love story. It is easy to see why this story has captivated the hearts of millions.

Houdini (2014)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This miniseries is based the novel Houdini: A Mind in Chains: A Psychoanalytic Portrait written by Bernard C. Meyer. Erik Weisz (Ehrich Weiss/Harry Weiss) enters the world of vaudeville entertainment to avoid becoming forgotten like his rabbi father. As the years progress, he starts to adopt a new name-Harry Houdini. After his marriage, he finds success by pushing his magician's career to its limits.

This miniseries was directed by Uli Edel. I do not know the history very well, so I can not comment on how accurate it was. I will tell you that this mini-series is done in two-parts and last for a total of roughly four hours. The story, and the cinematography, keep focus on the spectacle of his life and his career. There are references to his personal life, but they tend to be neglected with its direction. Naturally this isn't the first feature to re-enact his life, but with its focus on his career and the secrets that made his career special it offers newer audiences a peek into his world. It also does a great job in keeping this fragment of history relevant and fresh. What makes this series even more unique, is that it offers some glimpses into other moments in history. Adrien Brody played the role of Harry Houdini. His performance was great on screen. It breathed life into the series. Kristen Connolly played the role of Bess Houdini. She was great in supporting Brody's performance. Evan Jones played the role of Jim Collins. For the brief time that he was on screen, he gave the series its humorous touch.

I give this television series 4 out of 5 stars! It does a great job in keeping history fresh and entertaining.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This is very loosely based off the non-fiction novel entitled Beware the Night written by Ralph Sarchie and Lisa Collier Cool. New York Police Officer Ralph Sarchie, stumbles upon a very strange set of cases that appear to be connected. What connects them appears to be an evil force searching for recruits. Ralph and his partner join forces with a priest to combat this evil.

This film was directed by Scott Derrickson. This film is unique in that, even though it is based off a novel, it features non of the actual accounts mentioned in it. The entire plot has been altered for the film. The telling of an possession has become slightly more creative in this film. There are multiple incidents happening within a single film. Each one combines to create an in depth story. It also keeps away from using hand held cameras to showcase these events. There are handheld cameras used, just not very often. The jump scares and the exorcism itself is not original, but work for the premise of the film. It is humorous to know that an exorcism can be broken down into five easy steps. This film does boast a creepy atmosphere, and several intense sequences. There is plenty of violence, but not a ton of gore. Eric Bana played the role of Ralph Sarchie. He was able to carry much of the films intensity and emotion. Edgar Ramirez played the role of Mendoza (the priest). It is unusual for a film like this to have an unclean and perfect priest. He managed to pull the role off very well. Joel McHale played the role of Butler. Surprisingly, he was nearly unrecognizable in this film. He was good offering the non-believer support to Bana. Sean Harris played the role of Santino. He created the perfect intimidating villain that unites everything. It is a shame that he wasn't on screen more.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! Even if the scares are not original, the story is. It is upsetting that this film has no actual truth to it, but it does work.

This film is a prequel and a spin-off from the film The Conjuring. In the 1970's, Mia and John Gordon are preparing for their first child is Santa Monica, California. As a gift, John gives Mia a rare and unique doll for the baby's room. Shortly after, the people who murdered their neighbors entered theirs house. One of the assailants (Annabelle Higgins) manages to enchant the doll with evil. Even after Mia and John move, strange events continue to occur around the doll.

This film was directed by John R. Leonetti. This film is more of a spin-off than it is a prequel. There is only a few references to its predecessor. This story is a statement about the changing of an era. It shows how the culture was changing for the worse. This film offers a more detailed explanation about the infamous doll that appeared in The Conjuring film. This origin story shows how it was created and briefly explains what it is. Although, this film could've remained as a success with only a powerful ghost attached to it. The addition of a demon seems like over kill. There has been talk of making sequels to this film, which would be difficult due to the films ending. Unless they were to reveal the exorcism of the doll. Much of this film scares and chills feels taken from other popular supernatural horror films. But the jump scares do work with very minimal special effects. What is awesome to witness is how scary the doll is when it barely moves. There is very little gore in this film-since it relies more on its jump scares. This film begs the question: Why would anyone want to own a creepy doll? Annabelle Wallis played the role of Mia Gordon. She served a purpose for the film, but her performance feel flat most of the time. Ward Horton played the role of John Gordon. For the brief time that he was on screen, he was decent. Alfre Woodard played the role of Evelyn. It is unfortunate that he performance was also flat, because she is a talented performer.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good horror film that offers several jump scares, and a few chilling sequences.

This film is based off Richelle Meads novel with the same title. Rose Hathaway (a dhampir/half-human and half-vampire hybrid) is training to become a Moroi's guardian. The Moroi are peaceful mortal vampires that need to be protected against those vampires who would drink their blood. Lissa  Dragomir is a Moroi vampire struggling to learn her magical abilities. Rose is destined to become Lissa's protector, but they need to survive high school first.

This film was directed by Mark Waters. This film was made entirely for the fans of the book franchise. This is very much as advertised-Mean Girls meets Twilight. In the fashion of another set of teenage vampires stuck in high school, the story is told from the perspective of one. The real joke is that this film spends a good amount of time making fun of its predecessors like Twilight. There are other moments of humor that keep the film from completely dead panning itself. But its poorly written script does not keep afloat for very long. Sadly, the film turns out to be more of an anti-bulling campaign than anything else. It also raises a few general questions: When did all teenagers become so slutty? When did vampires need protecting? Fortunately there is some explanation, but there isn't enough film time to explain all the necessary backstory. There is nothing scary about this film, nor is there any gore. The action sequences, when they're present, are weak. The computer animation is enough to offer the film what little magic there is. The actual disappointment comes with the vampire effects since their can't be any. These vampires are essentially humans with magical abilities and an blood craving. There is also no real reason for a dhampir to want to protect them. A dhampir is nothing more than a trained human. The only creatures with true power are the insane vampires that are barley seen. Zoey Deutch played the role of Rose Hathaway. If the film didn't depend entirely on her perspective, it would have been better. Her performance as the character suited the film. Lucy Fry played the role of Lissa Dragomir. Her character wasn't particularly fascinating, but it worked for the film. The script took away anything that could be deemed as likable for this character. Gabriel Byrne played the role of Victor Dashkov. He was good for the limited time he was on screen. He wasn't an amazing villain, but he was there.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars! This film is purely for those fans of the novel series. As a general film, it falls flat. It also fails to stir enough interest to become a trend.

Dracula Untold (2014)

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

This film is based off the Dracula character created by Bram Stoker (1897). Prince Dracula, Vlad III Tepes, had been taken by the Turkish army to become one of its most deadly soldiers (a Janissary). Years later, he returns home to rule over Transylvania. However, his family is threatened by the return of the Turks wanting to take children (including his son) once again. After Dracula refuses the unbeatable war begins. Dracula decides to use a dark weapon (hidden within his land) to defeat them.

This film was directed by Gary Shore. Okay, this film tells a different story about Dracula. It therefore recreates the familiar horror character. The horror character is turned into a classic hero who plays with darkness. Many fans of classic Dracula ideals would despise this film. This film also plays the familiar tune of off-beat recreated classical tales with a good anti-hero. The story, albeit very predictable, is darkly heartfelt. It gives Dracula his only bad quality, in that he chooses ultimate vengeance over anything else. Since he is given his abilities early, there is hardly any suspense or actual horror. Which makes the film more emotional. With his only weakness being the sunlight, he destroys these armies within minutes. The film does present several great visual effects sequences. There is plenty of violence though. There is also a small possibility of a potential sequel. Luke Evans played the role of Dracula/Vlad. He created the perfect anti-hero that audiences could feel sympathetic for. His performance carried the films emotionally dark tone. Sarah Gadon played the role of Mirena. She was a could companion actor to Evans. Dominic Cooper played the role of Mehmed II. More could've done with the character to make him even more vile than he already was. Nevertheless, he is a good opposition for Evans. Charles Dance played the role of the Master Vampire. This is the monster variation that most audiences were expecting Dracula to be.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars! It is a good basis for a modern dark film. However, fans of the original Dracula will be disappointed.

This film is based off the cartoon characters Mr. Peabody and Sherman from the The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Mr. Peabody has raised his adoptive son, Sherman, to the best of his dog capabilities. He also has created a time machine called the WABAC, which he uses frequently to show Sherman the truth of history. After a fight in school, Mr. Peabody must prove to the world that he is a capable and loving father.

This film was directed by Rob Minkoff. I have not seen the classic animated series, nor did I watch this film in 3-D. That aside, this film has a complex plot that might often make children feel like Sherman. However, the focus on the characters development gives the film its family heart. There is an assumption that its audience knows what to expect, and quickly pulls audiences into the story with very little introduction. The film does have some uneven pacing, because each segment in time feels like it should be an individual episode. The film also struggles between offering a brief entertaining history lesson, its character humor, and its emotional depth. The humor for this film is mainly puns and physical humor. There is also some adult humor added for older audiences. The history segments are fairly truthful-even if they are dark. The story does make light on some of the darker moments in history. Ty Burrell voiced the character Mr. Peabody. He managed to make a highly intelligent character feel sincere. All lot about this character is subtle, but it works for the film. Max Charles voiced the character Sherman. He created a likable child character that did not become overly annoying throughout the film. Otherwise, his role was predictable but fitting. Ariel Winter voiced the character Penny Peterson. She succeeded in her only purpose-to create the changing character obstacles. She was the perfect secondary character for Sherman. Allison Janney voiced the character Ms. Grunion. It is unfortunate that her role was highly limited, but she was a very humorous villain.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! For all of its faults, it is still a great family film. The use of humor and character story works to make a great animated feature.

Eden Lake

Caution: This Might Contain Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Jenny and Steve decide to spend a romantic weekend in Eden Lake. However, their confrontation with a group of loutish teenagers proves to have deadly consequences.

This film was directed by James Watkins. This films story follows a stereotypical horror survival plot and uses stereotypical characters, but adds in a few unexpected twists. The story begins as predictable, but progresses into something unique. This story takes a close look at how troubled youth is created and nurtured through bad parenting. It is entertaining to watch the main character trusting the wrong people and murdering the wrong people-as is typical in these kinds of films. This foreign horror film has stirred some controversy with its story. Now, the story takes a questionable look at corrupted youth and contemplates the reason for this behavior. However, this has been viewed as a prejudice against working class people in Britain. Tossing all that aside, this film does contain some gore but nothing too over the top. There is some sexuality in it, but not much nudity. This horror film is more about the struggle for survival. It relies more on an unnerving technique than on using jump scares. Kelly Reilly played the role of Jenny. She did great carrying the film in a very low-cut dress. Her character was very stereotypical, but her performance gave the film a sympathetic heart. Michael Fassbender played the role of Steve. His character is highly stereotypical in his stupidity. Anyway, he offered a slight horror change in that he was more helpless than Reilly's character. His performance did the job that was intended, but the story did not allow his character to progress. Jack O'Connell played the role of Brett. He was a great teenage villain to oppose Reilly and Fassbender.

I give this film a 4 out of 5 stars! This is a great cultural horror film that can be seen by horror and non-horror audiences alike.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Caution: This Might Contian Spoilers!
If you enjoy my blog, you may enjoy my facebook page!

Albert Stark, a cowardly sheep farmer, decides to fight to win his lost love with the help of an attractive and mysterious stranger. All the while, they struggle just to survive in the old west.

This film was directed, written, and staring Seth MacFarlane. This film was obviously made for MacFarlane fans, and fans of modern comedy. The story has some heart to balance out some of the raunchy and toilet humor. However, the film's heart does become overshadowed by the unnecessary raunchy and toilet humor. There is a lot of lazy writing done to create a quick solution; which the film does use in satirical method. Much of the comedy is juvenile with some some occasional wit mixed into it. What is enjoyable is to watch how it makes fun of awfulness of the Wild West. The film makes amends by packing in several celebrity cameo appearances and cramming in nerd references (such as Back to the Future and Django). There are some gruesome moments, but nothing to extreme. In truth, the few moments of gruesomeness was done to keep humor in a slow part of the film. There is a lot of perversion in the film, but no real nudity. Seth MacFarlane played the role of Albert Stark. He spent a lot of time making this character into a cowardly nerd that does not belong in a western film. He did give the film its heart and its occasional humor, but felt emotionally unconnected to the character. Charlize Theron played the role of Anna Barnes-Leatherwood. She carried the films heartfelt story. Liam Neeson played the role of Clinch Leatherwood. Everything about his character was a great parody on himself as an action star.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars! It has some great humor that MacFarlane fans will recognize and enjoy. However, the film could've allowed for a better general story.
